Recovery of carbon Dioxide. In addition to the capture of otherwise vaporizable batch ingredients, carbon dioxide can be captured as a by-product of electric melting. For each 100 tons of glass delivered, 15 tons of CO2 will be given off. The gas is 99.5% pure and requires only a simple wet-chemical scrub to the suitable for commercial use.

The liquefaction cost of this CO2 is about $7 per ton and amortization and maintenance cost is another $7 per ton. The selling price as liquid is about $40 per ton, thus making recovery CO2 attractive.

Small Space Requirement. An electric furnace consists only of the Melter basin and throat-and-riser to the forehearth. The melting rate is about 4.5 feet/ton with present refractories (2.2 metric tons per square meter).

No extra space is required for regenerators, flues, and chimneys. The transformers are usually located outside.

Faster Furnace Rebuilds. Rebuild of an electric furnace can be accomplished readily in a period of ten days glass-to-glass. The crown and breast walls are practically always in excellent condition, since they have not been exposed to high temperature for longer than the starting and dormant periods.

The floor of electric furnace gave trouble in earlier period, but life is now quite satisfactory by using a thicker layer of fuse-cast refectory as the paving.

Uniformity of Glass. Since all of the glass has substantially the same thermal history when melted electrically, the glass delivered to the machine is much more homogeneous in working properties.

This allows the machines to work better, and has resulted in an improvement in percentage pack of soda -lime containers of 2 to 4%. The improvement for opal borosilicate and lead glasses has been more like 20%.
