✶ Rende Coffee – Adaptive Reuse of an Old House ✶

An old house is reopened, becoming a place to pause and stay.

The space of Rende Coffee is based on an existing historical building,
and has been repurposed through adaptive reuse.
While preserving its original structure and traces of time,
it has been transformed into a contemporary space for everyday use.

From a design perspective, this space is not simply “restored,”
but rather an act of spatial regeneration.

Walls, structures, and materials are not erased,
but preserved as evidence of time,
coexisting with new functions and ways of living.

More than a café,
it is a reinterpretation of how time and space can be lived.

✶ Beigang Yige: When the Street Becomes a Stage ✶

Every year in Beigang, Yunlin, a vibrant cultural performance unfolds in the streets—Yige ✨
Although this year’s event has come to an end,
the moving floats, lights, sounds, and crowds remain unforgettable.

From a design perspective, this is more than just a performance👇
🎭 Streets become stages
🚶 People become participants
💡 Light and sound shape spatial experience

Yige transforms local culture into a performative experience,
where movement, observation, and participation
co-create collective memory.

Even after the event ends,
this cultural landscape is still worth exploring.

Next time, take a walk through Beigang
and experience how the streets come alive.

✶ The little green man you see every day—“Mr. Pittato”—carries an important story of public safety design. ✶

In the 1970s, Japan was struck by two devastating department-store fires:
— the 1972 Sennichi Department Store fire in Osaka, which claimed 118 lives, and
— the 1973 Taiyo Department Store fire in Kumamoto, where 104 people were killed.

Investigations revealed a critical issue: emergency exits at the time were marked only by small “EXIT” or “出口” text. The lettering was tiny, visibility was poor, and in thick smoke and panic, people often collapsed just steps away from the escape route.
To solve this deadly problem once and for all, the Japan Fire Protection Association held an Emergency Exit Sign Design Competition in 1978.

Designer Toshifumi Kitanomatsu submitted the idea of a “person running toward an exit”—a symbol that required no reading and no language. Anyone could instantly understand: “Escape this way.”

Later, Tama Art University professor Yukio Ota refined the original design.
He softened the tense running posture, adjusted the proportions, and made the figure calmer and more recognizable under emergency conditions. With the advocacy of renowned graphic designer Mitsuo Katsui, the symbol was officially adopted across Japan, evolving into the complete system we know today: the green running figure + doorway + directional arrows.

✶ Why green?
In a fire, the environment is dominated by red and orange flames—red signage can easily be lost or confused. Green remains highly visible through smoke and also carries a universal psychological cue of “safety, permission, proceed.”
It gives people an immediate sense of where to go in chaos.

— 1982: Japan standardized the system nationwide.
— 1987: ISO officially adopted the symbol, making it the global standard for emergency exit signage.

The little green man is far more than a sign—he represents a milestone in public safety design and a classic example of successful international symbol standardization.

♡ Happy Mother’s Day ♡

✶ Mother’s Day Design Insight ✶

On Mother’s Day, we’d like to share a heartwarming design case from Japan—
the “Mom’s Handwritten Secret Curry Recipe” capsule toy.

This design transforms the familiar everyday experience of homemade curry into an interactive experience that can be collected, recreated, and emotionally felt.
By inviting six mothers to personally handwrite their family curry recipes, each capsule becomes more than just a product—it becomes an emotional medium carrying memories of home and family.

From a design perspective, what makes this concept so touching is its ability to
translate the abstract feeling of maternal love into a tangible and experiential design object.

The handwritten notes preserve each mother’s unique writing habits, tone, and traces of daily life, turning the recipe from mere information into a warm narrative interface.
As users open the capsule, read the handwriting, and follow the steps to cook, they complete an experiential journey from object → action → emotional memory.

This is exactly the charm of Emotional Design:
design is not only about function, but about reconnecting people with memory, flavor, and relationships.

Looking back at this case on Mother’s Day reminds us that
the most moving designs are often not the most complex technologies,
but those that help us rediscover the beauty of everyday life and preserve love in another form.

Finally, wishing all the amazing mothers,
♡ **Happy Mother’s Day** ♡

(Anger Room / Rage Room):

✶This Labor Day, want to “smash things to relieve stress”?✶

Have you ever been so angry that all you wanted to do was shout or smash something—but reality wouldn’t allow it?
In the US, someone saw this need and created the Anger Room / Rage Room.

For a small fee, you put on protective gear, grab a baseball bat, and in a small space modeled like a living room or office, you can smash TVs, bottles, appliances—safely letting out your rage!

This fun and therapeutic concept started in Dallas, Texas in 2008, quickly becoming a nationwide craze in the US.

So this Labor Day, if you want a unique way to unwind and de-stress, maybe it’s time to shout and smash your heart out!
