This short essay explains the FRC team, 6999 B.E.S.T.’s first year. As a rookie team, we wanted to share our experiences in the first year and the lessons we learned, with the new teams.
6999 B.E.S.T was founded in Turkey, Sinop in the summer of 2016. After our 2016 and 2017 Turkish Off season events, our first season experience was 2018 Power Up. Starting from Sinop, a small city in the north of Turkey, we hit the road and we attended Iowa Regional. With the Rookie All Star award we won there, we qualified for the 2018 FIRST Championship. So in the first year we experienced 2 different competitions. Here are some lessons we learned;
1-Contact other teams
It was difficult for us to be the first FRC team in Sinop. The teams we could idolize and help were miles away from us. We met them via social media. In times when we were inexperienced, we asked for help in various matters. All veterans returned to us and helped us with all sorts of issues such as software, transportation, mechanics, tool problems. FRC introduced us to other peoples, even from other countries, and taught us to help. Although were only a rookie team, we gained many ideas and we have learned to be sufficient. This has earned us the title of FIRST's Gracious Professionalism.
2-Plan
FRC is competing with time. The teams challenge their limits in the 6-week build process and do their best. We understood the importance of being planned in this process. The fact that the team is organizing in itself, distributing tasks and knowing everyone's responsibilities alleviated the burden of team members, and it saved us time in this short period of 6 weeks. We did not have the necessary organization during the competition period and we experienced some problems. With the help of the other teams, we solved our problems and learned how important it is to be planned.
3-Remember that you are a member of a team
The collective effort put together by the people gathered around the same purpose means teamwork. Being a member of a team makes us responsible individuals. It teaches us to listen to each other's ideas. We are not just teammates, we are friends. We went out on a trip together. This season, we understood that we were a family with our teammates and mentors.
4-Be creative
According to our observations in the competition, new and creative ideas in your team have a positive impact on other teams. These can be distributed badges, pit installations, even costumes. It is more remarkable to try different and unusual things, to give people a piece of your own culture (for example, we have distributed Turkish delights). In addition, researching and working with different sources gives a better result when designing our robot. But as a rookie it is best to keep the robot simple. Your team should only concentrate on the proper tasks, not all tasks.
5-Forget not, what you discover is more valuable than what you win
FIRST aims to cultivate producers and entrepreneurial individuals with problem-solving skills. What is important throughout the season is that we discover much more than we win. This season we met with robotics and started to research more, we learned to design robots, to make strategies. We learned to budget, write a business plan. We went to sponsorship meetings, we made our team's future plans. These were the first things that people like us, 15-16 years old, met. We aimed to share what we learned, to establish new teams, and by achieving this goal we formed 5 different teams. We learned to design projects to find solutions to problems around us. Since we are an international team, we went to a different country, USA, far away from our home. We met people from different cultures and saw new places. In this process, we also trained our English skills. In short, we learned that what we do is 'more than robots'.
6-Do not give up
We did not have enough technical and material resources. So we could not attend the 2017 season. We did not give up and wanted to try our chances for another year. There were times when we were in despair in this process. But we understand that this is the way it goes. Because, as a team, we can encounter material and immaterial troubles before and after the competition at any moment. In such moments we learned to trust ourselves and our team to produce the most appropriate solution to the problems that emerged. In doing so, we listened to our mentors' recommendations.
7-Fun
The most important lesson FRC thought us was to; have fun! Both the robot construction process and the competition are very fun. Unlike other competitions, FIRST organizations are not just a robot competition. Thanks to the theme set every year, teams do not just make robots, they show their creativity. Tournaments are almost festive. Everyone is in high school age and the purpose is to compete friendlier and have fun together.
Bu kısa yazımız bir FRC takımı olan 6999 B.E.S.T. in ilk yılını anlatıyor. Bir rookie takımı olarak ilk yılımızda edindiğimiz tecrübeleri ve öğrendiğimiz dersleri yeni takımlarla paylaşmak istedik.
6999 B.E.S.T. 2016 yazında Sinop, Türkiye’de kuruldu. 2016 ve 2017 Turkish Offseason yarışmalarından sonra ilk sezon deneyimimiz 2018 Power Up oldu. Türkiye’nin en kuzeyinde yer alan ve küçük bir il olan Sinop’tan yola çıktık ve Iowa Regional’a katıldık. Burada kazandığımız Rookie All Star ödülü ile 2018 FIRST Dünya Şampiyonasına katılmaya hak kazandık. Böylece daha ilk yılımızda 2 farklı yarışma deneyimledik. İşte öğrendiğimiz bazı dersler;
1-Diğer takımlarla iletişim kur
Bulunduğumuz il olan Sinoptaki ilk FRC takımı olmak bizim için zordu. Örnek alabileceğimiz ve yardımlaşabileceğimiz takımlar bizden kilometrelerce uzaktaydı. Onlara sosyal medyadan ulaştık, tanıştık. Eksik kaldığımız zamanlarda çeşitli konularda yardım istedik. Bütün veteranlar bize geri döndü ve yazılım, ulaşım, mekanik, parça sıkıntısı gibi her türlü konuda yardım ettiler. FRC bizi diğer illerden, hatta diğer ülkelerden yaşıtlarımızla tanıştırdı ve onlarla yardımlaşmayı öğretti. Bu sayede rookie olmamıza rağmen bir çok konuda fikir sahibi olduk ve ihtiyaçlarımızı karşıladık. Bu da bize FIRST ün Duyarlı Profesyonellik ilkesini kazandırdı.
2-Planlı ol
FRC zamanla yarışmaktır. Takımlar, 6 haftalık robot yapımı sürecinde sınırlarını zorlar ve elinden gelenin en iyisini yapar. Bu süreçte planlı olmanın önemini anladık. Takımın kendi içinde organize olması, görev dağılımı yapması ve herkesin sorumluluğunu bilmesi hem takım üyelerinin yükünü hafifletti, hem de 6 haftalık bu kısa sürede bize zaman kazandırdı. Yarışma döneminde gerekli organizasyonu yapamamış ve bazı parçalarda sıkıntı yaşamıştık. Diğer takımların yardımıyla problemimizi halettik ve planlı olmanın ne kadar önemli olduğunu anladık.
3-Bir takımın üyesi olduğunu unutma
Aynı amaç etrafında toplanan insanların birlikte ortaya koyduğu emek, takım çalışması demektir. Bir takıma üye olmak, bizi sorumluluk sahibi bireyler yapar. Birbirimiz fikirlerini dinlemeyi öğretir. Biz, sadece takım arkadaşı değil, gerçek dostlar olduk. Beraber yolculuklara çıktık. Bu sezon, takım üyeleri ve mentörleriyle bir aile olduğumuzu anladık.
3-Yaratıcı ol
Yarışmadaki gözlemlerimize göre, takımınızdaki yeni ve yaratıcı fikirler diğer takımlar üzerinde pozitif bir etki bırakıyor. Bu dağıtılan rozetler, pit kurulumu hatta kostümler bile olabilir. Farklı ve alışılmamış şeyler denemek, insanlara kendi kültürünüzden bir parça vermek (mesela biz Türk lokumu dağıttık) daha dikkat çekici oluyor. Ayrıca robotu tasarlarken araştırmak ve farklı örneklerle çalışmak daha iyi bir sonuç sağlıyor. Fakat bir rookie olarak robotu basit tutmak en doğrusu. Bütün görevlere değil, sadece takımınıza uygun görevlere yoğunlaşılmalı.
4-Unutma, keşfettiklerin kazandıklarından daha önemli
FIRST problem çözme becerisine sahip, üretici ve girişimci bireyler yetiştirmeyi hedefler. Sezon boyunca önemli olan, kazandıklarımızdan çok keşfettiklerimizdir. Bu sezon robotikle tanıştık ve daha çok araştırmaya başladık, robot tasarlamayı, strateji yapmayı öğrendik. Bütçe hazırlamayı, iş planı yazmayı öğrendik. Sponsorluk görüşmelerine gittik, takımımızın gelecek planlarını yaptık. Bunlar bizim gibi 15-16 yaşındaki gençlerin ilk defa karşılaştığı şeylerdi. Öğrendiklerimizi paylaşmayı, yeni takımlar kurmayı hedefledik ve bu hedefi gerçekleştirerek 5 farklı takım kurduk. Etrafımızdaki sorunlara çözümler bulmak için projeler tasarlamayı öğrendik. International bir takım olduğumuz için, evimizden çok uzakta farklı bir ülkeye, Amerika’ya gittik. Farklı kültürden insanlarla tanıştık, yeni yerler gördük. Bu süreçte İngilizcemizi de geliştirdik. Kısacası yaptığımız işin ‘robottan daha fazlası’ olduğunu öğrendik.
5-Pes etme
Bulunduğumuz ilde hem teknik hem de maddi açıdan yeterli imkanlarımız yoktu. Bu yüzden 2017 sezonuna katılamadık. Pes etmeyip bir yıl daha şansımızı denemek istedik. Bu süreçte umutsuzluğa kapıldığımız zamanlar oldu. Fakat bu işin böyle ilerlediğini anladık. Çünkü bir takım olarak yarışma öncesi, sonrası, maddi ve manevi sıkıntılarla her an karşılaşabiliyoruz. Böyle anlarda kendimize ve takımımıza güvenip karşımıza çıkan sorunlara en uygun çözümü üretmeyi öğrendik. Bunu yaparken de mentörlerimizin tavsiyelerini dinledik.
7-Eğlen
FRC nin bize kattığı en önemli şey; eğlenmek! Hem robot inşa sürecinde hem de turnuva zamanı çok eğlenceli geçiyor. FIRST organizasyonları diğer yarışmalardan farklı olarak sadece bir robot yarışması değil. Her yıl belirlenen tema sayesinde takımlar sadece robot yapmıyor, yaratıcılıklarını sergiliyorlar. Turnuvalar adeta festival havasında. Herkes lise çağında ve amaç arkadaşça rekabet ve birlikte eğlenmek.
