🇲🇽 The Voladores (Pilots/Flying Men) or Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Pilots) of Papantla is a sacred fertility dance and ritual of the Indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America, designated as UNESCO Intangible Heritage.
Background information on this fascinating ceremony:
🌵Origins: With roots dating back centuries, it is an original ritual of the Totonac people to communicate with the gods and pray for abundant rainfall. Most famous viewing
🌵locations: Papantla, Veracruz, and at Xcaret amusement park.
🌵The practice: Five participants climb a pole approximately 30 meters high. One person plays music (flute and drums) at the top of the pole while the other four are tied to ropes and released from the top, spinning 13 times before gliding to the ground, symbolizing the cycle of seasons and the cosmos.
