Time after time people talk of Chiang Mai as a city with an old and beautiful culture, a city of ethnic diversity, a city of creativity or as a city with rich natural beauty surrounding a modern urban society.But there is another dimension that many people overlook, that Chiang Mai is internationally recognized as a “City of Music”.
The diversity of cultures that have circulated through the city over more than 720 years have been the impetus for its people to create art in order to sustain their lives, and one of these arts has been music, both folk, ethnic and contemporary music. All have uniquely intermingled in the progress of the people’s lives. This impressive harmony is not easily found in other cities, but has happened here in Chiang Mai.
This long founded way of life of the city has made the people here open and adaptable to the influence of external cultures, including to jazz, which has been integrated into the forms of music and entertainment which Chiang Mai people accept and relate to in their lives.
