Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society - SIFAS Kala Samskriti Lakshanam - "Art Characterises Civilisation"
www.sifas.org The Society began humbly in 1949 with only 12 members.

Today, it has a Principal, a Vice-Principal, 28 highly qualified full-time tutors, over 2000 members and students.

​Developing and sustaining that curriculum has by far been one of the greatest challenges for the Society, but one that has yielded many benefits. It has fostered homegrown talents and created an awareness and understanding of the Indian cultural heritage, which is particularly valuable in the multi-ethnic Singapore.

Warmest birthday wishes to Guru Shanta Ponnudurai on the joyous occasion of her 80th birthday.

A renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer and teacher, Guru Shanta had the rare privilege of training under Smt Rukmini Devi Arundale, the Founder of Kalakshetra Foundation. A cherished member of the SIFAS teaching faculty from 1988 to 2000, she inspired generations of students through her artistry, dedication and knowledge.

SIFAS honours her remarkable contribution and enduring legacy, and wishes her continued good health and happiness.

A morning of ideas, perspectives and meaningful conversations at the SIFAS Annexe.

Earlier today, SIFAS had the pleasure of welcoming Mr R. Gopalakrishnan, former Director of Tata Sons, accomplished author, teacher and speaker, to our Middle Road campus, where he toured our spaces and learnt more about SIFAS’ work in nurturing and promoting the Indian arts.

This was followed by a special session at the SIFAS Annexe around his book Chanakya and Sun Tzu: A Business Lens on Trade, Thought and Travel, co-authored with Nirmala Isaac.

During the session, Mr Gopalakrishnan shared insightful perspectives on India and China, touching on the historical, cultural and economic connections between the two civilisations, and the role of trade, travel and the exchange of ideas in shaping their journeys over time.

The morning also featured an engaging Q&A session, offering attendees the opportunity to interact with Mr Gopalakrishnan and delve deeper into the themes discussed.

The event was co-sponsored by Tata, TiE Singapore and SIFAS, bringing together communities around a shared interest in ideas, culture and cross-cultural exchange.

We thank Mr R. Gopalakrishnan for visiting SIFAS and for generously sharing his time, insights and perspectives with our community.

Yesterday evening, the SIFAS Annexe Theatre came alive with RAKHTABHA – The Red Aura, a solo Kathak production by Aishwarya Verma, presented by SIFAS Productions.

Through traditional Kathak, literature and contemporary expression, RAKHTABHA explored the many meanings of the colour red — from feminine beauty, fertility and love to resistance, anger and divine strength — celebrating the many dimensions of feminine energy and Shakti.

We thank Aishwarya Verma for bringing this powerful and expressive work to the SIFAS stage, and everyone who joined us at the SIFAS Annexe for the evening.

Unsaid, an upcoming Bharatanatyam dance production exploring themes related to life with dementia. The production explores themes of love and loss, the liminal nature of memory, the search for identity and meaning when one is faced with memory loss, and how the relationship between loved ones changes as a result. The production seeks to show that despite the changes, confusion and challenges, love is still present and felt in deep and different ways.

A celebration of learning, artistry and achievement. ✨

Academy Day 2026 brought together our students, families, teachers and the SIFAS community for an evening celebrating dedication, growth and artistic excellence.

This year, we celebrated 76 graduates, with 20 students receiving the Visharad Title or Best Student Award, alongside 23 Diploma and 53 Certificate recipients.

The evening also showcased the breadth of our Academy, with 119 student performance appearances across Carnatic, Hindustani, Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, alongside a Visual Arts Exhibition featuring 24 students and 38 paintings.

We were honoured to welcome His Excellency Mr Paul Thoppil, High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore, as our Guest of Honour. Reflecting on the role of cultural institutions in Singapore and Canada, His Excellency spoke of the importance of creating space for cultural heritage to thrive:
“I therefore welcome the underlying tenets of Singapore society, which enable you to pursue one's economic dreams in Singapore, while permitting us to celebrate Indian culture and its arts.”

We were also honoured to have the Chairman of SIFAS Board of Trustees, Mr Shabbir Hassanbhai in attendance.

A heartfelt congratulations to all our graduates, award recipients, performers and Visual Arts students, and our deepest appreciation to our Gurus, families, volunteers and supporters who continue to nurture the next generation of artists.
