One of the most important reminders from my conversation with Dave Ulrich wasn't about strategy, ex*****on, or talent.
It was about something many leaders often overlook:
Are you taking care of yourself?
Dave shared that whenever he coaches leaders, he almost always begins and ends with that question.
Because if we don't take care of ourselves, it becomes very difficult to take care of others.
He spoke about five dimensions of self-care:
✨ Intellectual — Are you still curious and learning? ❤️ Emotional — How are you managing stress and anxiety? 🤝 Social — Do you have meaningful relationships beyond work? 💪 Physical — Are you taking care of your health, sleep, and energy? 🌱 Spiritual — Are you connected to a sense of meaning and purpose?
What resonated with me most is that leadership is not only about helping others succeed. It's also about ensuring we have the capacity to continue serving, leading, and making a difference.
Sometimes the most powerful leadership question is not, "How is my team doing?"
It's "How am I doing?"
Which of these five areas do you need to pay more attention to today?
