Meet Roy Lim in his late fifties who started exercising two and a half years ago and will be taking part in Ironman 70.3 in Melbourne.
Before, Roy was a one pack a day smoker and consumes alcohol quite a bit. He has never run for the last 40 years
All that changed two and a half years ago when the country went into a lockdown on April 7th, 2020. He started to brisk walk and then gradually progressed to running. He then started to cycle again and thought maybe he should start to look at participating in a triathlon. For that, he needs to learn how to swim well too and did not hesitate to get a get a swim coach to better his swimming techniques.
In the midst of the training, he had to go through a surgery to fix his torn meniscus on his right knee which took him 14 months to fully recover.
"I learned that to go fast one needs to go slow fast."... and
"I've learned that as a mature senior athlete, our bodies are no longer like when we were in their twenties where we can get away with a lot of things."
"Today, I feel a lot younger. I feel a lot stronger than ten, 20 years ago. If you are like me, we've got our children and grandchildren and dogs to look after. There is no excuse for one to go out there and exercise. I think it's very important because we don't want to add days to our life, we would rather add life to our days. So that means a healthy lifestyle. Eat right. Sleep well and have a positive mindset. Age is just a number."
