The Peranakan Association Singapore -TPAS Preserving and promoting Peranakan culture. Find out more at https://www.peranakan.org.sg Penang followed suit in 1920.

The history of The Peranakan Association Singapore goes back to its origins when as the Straits Chinese British Association (SCBA) it was formed on 17 August 1900 with Mr Tan Jiak Kim as its first president. One of its original objectives was "to afford facilities for the discussion of all questions relating to the social and moral welfare" of the community. The Association attracted the leading l

ights of Peranakan society and it did not take long before a branch of the SCBA was established in October of the same year in Malacca, the land of the forefathers of the members. On 31 August 1931 the SCBA petitioned the Governor Sir Cecil Clementi for the appointment of a Chinese member to the Executive Council which request though not immediately acceded to, did eventually lead to the appointment of SCBA member Mr Wee Swee Teow to the Executive Council in 1933. The Petition was jointly signed by Sir Lim Han Hoe, Mr Heah Joo Seang and Sir Tun Tan Cheng Lock as Presidents of the SCBA Singapore, SCBA Penang and SCBA Malacca respectively. In it they also called for the Nomination of one elected representative from each of their associations to the Legislative Council. With the emergence of Singapore as an independent state the name of the SCBA Singapore was changed to the Singapore Chinese Peranakan Association on 11 December 1964 before finally becoming The Peranakan Association on 23 February 1966. The Membership of The Peranakan Association has risen from 342 in 1993 to over 2,100 today. Since the first Baba Nyonya Convention was held in Penang in 1988, the annual event hosted in rotation by member associations in the Federation of Peranakan Associations has been a highlight of Associationโ€™s calendar. Finally, a history of the present-day Peranakan Association will not be complete without paying tribute to our late Honorary Life President, Mr T W Ong whose dedication to and love of the Association has enabled it to thrive during his term of office from 1950 to 1991. Dr George Tay took over the helm from 1990 until 1996. Mr Lee Kip Lee was president from 1996-2010, followed by Mr Peter Wee (2010-2018), and Mr Colin Chee (2018-2022). Ms Genevieve Peggy Jeff is the current president and also the first nyonya president of the Association.

Dear Nyonyas and Babas, In this monthโ€™s video, Iโ€™m joined by Nyonya Noreen Chan, Chef Anup, and Nyonya Theresa Chan as we share some exciting upcoming events from the Peranakan community.

First, Chef Anup introduces TPASโ€™ new 2026 series of appetite-whetting live cooking demonstrations and food tastings. The next session, Popiah & Porridge: Comfort Food Done Right with Chef Lilian Chua, will explore the techniques and traditions behind these humble yet unforgettable comfort foods.

As durian season approaches, we are also planning a special seasonal session between June and early July 2026, depending on the peak of the season. Chef Anup will teach participants how to make a fragrant and indulgent durian Swiss roll, while also sharing insights into the world of durians.

Next, Nyonya Theresa shares about the Peacock Power Exhibition happening on 6 and 7 June 2026. The programme features curated talks, tours, and performances connected to the Peacock Power exhibition. Join Baba Raymond as he speaks about kebaya culture, while Nyonya Angeline Kong shares her love for kasut manek. There will also be performances by Vocabella and The Peranakan Voices. Be sure to follow their social media pages for updates.

Finally, Dr Noreen reminds members about the upcoming TPAS AGM, taking place at the Ixora Room, Peranakan Museum, on Sunday afternoon, 21 June 2026. As this is an election year, your presence and participation are especially important, so do keep a lookout for further details.

She also shares updates on the 37th Baba Nyonya Convention, which returns to Penang this year. Details are on our page.. Early bird rates are available, so do book early as places are filling up quickly. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/37thConvention2026

It was here that the earliest waves of Chinese settlers took root, intermarried with local communities, and gave rise to the vibrant, syncretic culture that we in Singapore continue to celebrate today. We are pleased to announce that the 37th Baba Nyonya International Convention will be held in Penang, Malaysia. Our sister association, State Chinese Penang Association (SCPA) is the organiser of the convention this year.

Organiser's Message:

This year, the Convention returns to Penang, bringing together Peranakan communities across the globe in a celebration of heritage, fellowship and living traditions. This yearโ€™s theme โ€œUnveiling the Peranakan Withinโ€ invites delegates to look beyond the many roles and identities of everyday life and reconnect with the heart and spirit of being Peranakan. The Convention programme combines meaningful cultural exchange with immersive experiences that showcase the richness of Penangโ€™s Peranakan culture. Delegates will be welcomed at the Esplanade for โ€œDondang Sayang, a Peranakan Street Soireeโ€, a lantern-lit evening inspired by the nostalgic atmosphere of Chap Goh Meh, featuring Penangโ€™s sedap-licious hawker fare and the timeless melodies of Dondang Sayang. The gala dinner, โ€œGrace Behind the Mask โ€“ A Peranakan Masquerade Ballโ€, marks the first black-tie gala in the Conventionโ€™s 37-year history. Elegant yet playful, the evening reimagines the Masquerade as a celebration of the many layers of culture, memory, and grace that shape the Peranakan experience. More than a Convention, this gathering unveils the heart of the Peranakan spirit, leaving delegates with a renewed sense of what matters most, and how each of their stories continues to weave together a living masterpiece of the vibrant Peranakan community.

We are pleased to offer the following package for TPAS members that includes:

3 Days 2 Nights accommodation

The heavy rain did not deter the participants from attending this special class, conducted by Nyonya Teh Gaik Lean. No one could guess, with her thorough explanations, that she was teaching and sharing these recipes for the very first time in a classroom setting. Nyonya Gaik Lean walked us through the two recipes, sharing tips and pointers with the audience. From how to select the right crabs to which brand of tao cheo go pick, Nyonya Gaik was generous to the end with dishing out her 'trade secrets'.

The audience was then treated to a generous portion of the two dishes demonstrated. The two savoury treats were complemented by sweet treats prepared by the chefs at Allspice Institute, our venue sponsor. And of course, three kinds of keropok from Penang and Ipoh, specially brought by Nyonya Gaik Lean.

TPAS would like to extend our gratitude to Nyonya Gaik Lean, for showcasing another side of Peranakan culture. We would also like to thank the team at Allspice Institute for venue and support.

Do join us for the next cooking demo by Chef Lilian Chua!
