Poland will host the BETARD WSF World Masters Squash Championships in 2022. The best male and female players over 35 years of age will compete at the Hasta La Vista centre, the biggest squash club in the world. The World Masters history is not long, but certainly illustrious. It was 1991 when the first global tournament purely for mature age players was held in Auckland, New Zealand. Suffice it to

say that in the 2018 edition of the biennial event, in Charlottsville (USA), there were 755 players from 59 nations competing. We hope to further better that result in Wrocław. And hopefully, with your help, we will. Join us today for an unforgettable squash and social event!

The BETARD WSF World Masters Championships 2022, a week-long celebration of squash with over 1500 matches played and 650 players competing, is officially over.

It was a long wait for Hasta La Vista, the largest squash club in the world, after the event - originally scheduled for 2020 - was postponed twice in previous years. In the end it seemed the wait was worth it and made for an hopefully unforgettable event.

Saturday was an eventful finals day. Laurens Jan Anjema won the M35+ draw at the World Masters 2018 and it seemed the title might stay in Dutch hands with top seed Piedro Schweertman zooming through every round before the final without dropping a single game. However on Saturday, in front of over 500 spectators at the all-glass court, a top-notch performance from South Africa’s Christo Potgieter saw him win 3:0 in a match he controlled from start to finish.

- It’s been an amazing week in an amazing venue with so many players competing. The support and the atmosphere on the glass-court today was incredible to play in - said Potgieter.

There was plenty of success for other RSA players as well. Karen Blom won the W40+ draw beating English top seed Natalie Lawrence and Samantha Herbert won the W45+ draw against the unseeded Lotta Vuorela of Finland. This is Herbert’s second gold medal after she won the W40+ draw back in 2016 in Johannesburg.

Their compatriot, Pierr Roodt dominated the M65+ draw, winning all his matches 3:0, adding an astounding third world title to his resume. In 1997 Roodt was crowned M40+ champion and in 2012 he added a M55+ gold. Eleven years later, he can celebrate again.

It took even longer, but Sweden’s Fredrik Johnson finally has another World Masters title to his name. Johnson won the M35+ draw all the way back in 1999 and now has managed to win the M55+ draw in Wrocław. In the final, the Swede came back from being 2:1 down against France’s Thierry Scianimanico. Two titles, 23 years apart.

There were also first ever titles for the likes of Derek Ryan, Nicolette Fernandes and Jose Flores Vela. Ireland’s Ryan, the former World #7, beat the tenacious Adrian Hansen from RSA in the M50+ draw, Guyana’s Fernandes topped the W35+ group and Gibraltar’s Vela won a highly entertaining final against Germany’s Heiko Schwarzer in the M40+. The skillful and fearless Vela finished the event without losing a game in 6 matches.

USA’s Michael Gough, the oldest player in the entire tournament (born in February 1939) topped the M80+ finals group. Gough played the title decider against England’s Adrian Wright who was aiming for a mind-boggling fifth career title. The match went all the way, with the American taking it 11-9 in the fifth. It’s Gough's second Masters gold after he won the M75+ in 2014.

England’s Ann Manley wrote Masters history as her triumph in the W75+ category (perfect record: five 3:0 wins) means she now has 5 titles to her name overall! Manley won one in the 60+ (2006), one in the 65+ (2012), two in the W70+ (2016, 2018) and now the 75+ draw.

To już koniec trwającego przez cały tydzień święta squasha w Hasta La Vista. BETARD WSF Mistrzostwa Świata Masters 2022, w których 650 zawodników rozegrało ponad 1500 meczów, dobiegły końca.

Wrocław długo musiał czekać na ten event, który był przekładany aż dwukrotnie, najpierw na 2021 rok, a później 2022. Ostatecznie opłacało się jednak czekać, bo to było niezapomniane 7 dni w naszym klubie!

W dniu finałowym działo się naprawdę sporo. Holender Laurens Jan Ajema był ostatnim graczem, który wygrał tytuł M35+ podczas World Masters 2018 i wydawało się, że tytuł zostanie w holenderskim posiadaniu, bo w sobotę walczył o niego Piedro Schweertman.

Dobrze znany w Polsce gracz wygrywał wszystkie wcześniejsze rundy bez straty seta i był faworytem finału. Przy pełnych trybunach i na oczach ponad 500 kibiców to jednak Christo Potgieter z Republiki Południowej Afryki zagrał prawie bezbłędny mecz i pokonał byłego lidera ranking PZSQ 3:0.

- To był niesamowity tydzień w niesamowitym klubie. Wspaniale grało się w atmosferze, którą stworzyliście dzisiaj na szklanym korcie - mówił po finale Potgieter.

Świetnie poszło też innym graczom z RPA. Karen Blom wygrała kategorię W40+, a Samantha Herbert W45+. Dla tej drugiej, to już kolejny złoty medal w karierze: wcześniej wygrała też kategorię W40+ w 2016 roku.

Trzecie mistrzostwo masters na swoje konto zapisał z kolei Pierr Roodt również z RPA. Roodt wygrał wszystkie mecze w kategorii M65+ bez straty seta. Długo czekał na kolejny tryumf, bo ostatnie złoto zdobył 11 lat temu, w kategorii M55+, a jeszcze wcześniej aż w 1997 roku (wtedy M40+).

Ponad dwie dekady na następny triumf musiał czekać Fredrik Johnson ze Szwecji. Wygrał kategorię M35+ w 1999 roku i dopiero w sobotę kolejne złoto w kategorii M55+. 23 lata przerwy między tytułami! Johnson przegrywał 2:1 w sobotnim finale z Francuzem Thierrym Scianimanico, ale odrobił straty i wygrał decydującego seta.

Swoje pierwsze tytuły wygrali m.in. Derek Ryan, Nicolette Fernandes i Jose Flores Vela. Irlandczyk Ryan, były #7 rakieta świata, pokonał nieustępliwego Adriana Hansen z RPA w M50+, Fernandes (Guyana) wygrał grupę W35+, a Vela (Gibraltar) z wygrał emocjonujący finał z Niemcem Heiko Schwarzerem w M40+ i w całym turnieju nie stracił ani jednego seta.

Najstarszy gracz w tych Mistrzostwach, Michael Gough z USA (urodzony w lutym 1939 roku), okazał się najlepszy w kategorii M80+. W ostatnim meczu pokonała Adriana Wrighta z Anglii, który starał się o swój 5 tytuł w karierze. Panowie potrzebowali pięciu setów, ale ostatecznie to Gough był lepszy i wygrał 11-9 w piątym. Historię zapisała też Ann Manley z Anglii, dla której triumf w kategorii W75+ we Wrocławiu oznaczał już piąty złoty medal w karierze!

After Friday’s semifinals we now know which players will play for the BETARD WSF World Masters Championships 2022 titles.

In the day's first encounter on the all-glass court, Adrian Hansen [3/4] again carried the RSA flag high as he advanced to the M50+ final after beating Christian Borgvall [5/8] of Sweden in 5 games. Hansen will face top seed and former World number #4, Derek Ryan for the title. The Irish favourite won yet another match - this time against Guyana's Richard Chin - without dropping a game.

Another RSA player who needed all 5 games to make it to the final was Christo Potgieter [2/2] who came back from 2:1 down against Ukraine’s Valerii Fedoruk [3/4]. The quick-around-the-court Potgieter got a much better start in the fifth game and staved off Fedoruk’s comeback attempt. Potgieter might need all that speed and more when he plays Dutchman Piedro Schweertman [1/2], who comfortably beat Pakistan’s Karamatullah Khan [5/8] today, recording his 5th match in a row without dropping a game.

In the W45+ Finland’s Lotta Vuorela continues her great run and is now in the final after winning a close match against Melanie Kreisel [5/8] of Germany. Vuorela will play top seed Samantha Herbert [1/2] of RSA.

- It felt strange at the beginning because I got a walkover in the previous round and hadn’t played a match since Tuesday. After a while I managed to relax, find better length and play my game - Vuorela commented on her win.

In the W60+ the top seeds, England’s Mandy Akin [1/2] and Finland’s Sari Niemisto [2/2] set up their final meeting after beating Julie Multamaki (Canada) and Jill Campion (Wales) respectively.

England’s Adrian Wright and USA’s Michael Gough will battle it out for M80+ gold on Saturday as they both won their first two 1-4 group matches. Bertil Walli (Finland) and Tom Slattery (Australia) will be each looking for their first win of this stage and a bronze medal that will come with it.

There’s a similar story in the W75+, where England’s Ann Manley [1/2] and RSA’s Margaret Hunt-Kemp [2/2] both have four wins in the group and play their last match against each other to see who will take home the first place.

In the M40+ both semis saw the seeds Gibraltar’s Ivan Flores Vela [1/2] and Germany’s Heiko Schwarzer [2/2] go through unscathed with straight game wins. Either of them is yet to lose a game in the tournament and their matchup promises to be the most evenly matched.

Things got a bit complicated in the W35+ medal group after Olga Kolarova [3/4] beat RSA’s Siyoli Waters [2/2]. The 5-time Czech National Champion Kolarova was already close to upsetting top seed Nicolette Fernandes [1/2] on Thursday, but the Guyanian player came back from 2:1 and 9-3 down. On Friday however, Kolavora was clearly the better player and her win leaves the group wide open. If Waters can beat Fernandes tomorrow, all three players will have one win.

- I think Siyoli was amazing today. When you give her space, she’s so dangerous on the attack so I just tried to close the court down and it worked. That was my last match of the tournament. All I can do now is watch and see what happens - Kolarova said after her win.

The final day of the World Masters 2022 starts at 10:00 AM (GMT+2) on all courts besides the all-glass court where the first final will begin at 10:30.

Po piątkowych meczach wiemy już, którzy zawodnicy zagrają o pierwsze miejsca na BETARD WSF World Masters 2022.

W pierwszym pojedynku dnia, półfinale M50+, Adrian Hansen [3/4] dał powody do radości dużej grupie fanów z RPA, kiedy udało mu się pokonać Christiana Borgvalla [5/8] po 5 setach. Hansen zagra z najwyżej rozstawionym Derekiem Ryan'em. Irlandczyk to była #4 rakieta świata i dzisiaj znów nie stracił seta, pokonując w finale Richarda China z Guyany.

Inny gracz z RPA też potrzebował aż 5 setów, żeby awansować do finału kategorii M35+. Christo Potgieter, bo o nim mowa, przegrywał 2:1 z Valeriim Fedorukiem [3/4] z Ukrainy, ale zdołał odrobić straty i wyjść na mocne prowadzenie w decydującym secie. Szybkość, którą Potgieter pokazywał w tym meczu na pewno przyda się w finale, gdzie zagra z Piedro Schweertmanem [1/2]. Holender pewnie pokonał Pakistańczyka Kamę Khana [5/8] i zaliczył piąty mecz bez straty seta.

Swoją świetną passę kontynuuje też nierozstawiona Lotta Vuorela z Finlandii, która awansowała do finału W45+, pokonując Niemkę Melanie Kreisel [5/8]. Vuorela spotka się w walce o złoto z Samanthą Herbert [1/2] z RPA.

- Na początku grało mi się dziwnie, bo miałam walkowera w ćwierćfinale i od wtorku nie grałam meczu. Po jakimś czasie zdołałam się zrelaksować i dzięki lepszej długości, zaczęłam grać swoje - mówiła Vuorela.

W kategorii M80+ zastosowano system grupowy, ale już wiadomo, że to Adrian Wright z Anglii i Michael Gough z USA zagrają w sobotę o pierwszej miejsce, bo wygrali swoje pierwsze dwa mecze. W odwrotnej pozycji są Bertil Walli z Finlandii i Tom Slattery z Australii, którzy spotkają się ze sobą w meczu o pierwsze zwycięstwo w grupie i przy okazji o brązowy medal.

Podobnie jest u pań 75+, gdzie obie Ann Manley [1/2] i Margaret Hunt-Kemp [2/2] wygrały już po cztery mecze w swojej grupie. W ostatnim spotykają się ze sobą. Zwyciężczyni wygrywa wszystko.

W M40+ dwóch faworytów przeszło przez półfinały suchą stopą: zarówno Ivan Flores Vela [1/2] z Gibraltaru, jak i Niemiec Heiko Schwarzer [2/2] wygrali 3:0. Ich finał może być najbardziej wyrównanym ze wszystkich.

Sytuacja jest o wiele bardziej skomplikowana w kategorii W35+, gdzie w grupie medalowej, Olga Kolarova [3/4] pokonała dzisiaj Siyoli Waters [2/2]. Kolarova to 5-krotna Mistrzyni Czech, która wczoraj niemal pokonała jedynkę tej kategorii, Nicoletter Fernandes, z którą prowadziła 2:1 i 9-3, ale ostatecznie przegrała. Dzisiaj było jednak zdecydowanie lepsza od rywalki, co oznacza, że w tej grupie jeszcze wiele może się wydarzyć. Jeśli w ostatnim meczu Waters zdoła jutro pokonać Fernandes, to wszystkie zawodniczki będą miały po jednej wygranej.

- Siyoli grała dzisiaj świetnie. Jeśli da się jej miejsce i możliwość do ataku, to jest bardzo niebezpieczna dlatego nie mogłam otwierać kortu i zbyt wcześnie atakować. To był mój ostatni mecz w turnieju. Zrobiłam swoje, a teraz mogę tylko patrzeć, co wydarzy się w meczu Fernandes-Waters - mówiła po spotkaniu Kolarova.

Sobotni dzień finałowy zaczyna się o 10:00 na wszystkich kortach poza kortem szklanym, gdzie pierwszy finałowy pojedynek zaplanowano na godzinę 10:30.
