Spotlight on the EGC2025 Exhibitors!

As the European Go Congress winds down, it’s the perfect moment to make a quick stop by our exhibitor area and appreciate those who brought so much energy (and Go gear!) to the foyer. From books and vintage stones to online tools and teaching resources, our exhibitors added something truly special to the Congress experience.

Boards N’Stones showcased a great selection of Go books available to purchase online; Baduk Club brought restored bowls and classic stones from around the world; Polgote returned with their full lineup of books and equipment; the European Go Journal team showcased their beautifully designed yearbooks and magazines and Yunguseng Dojang, the online Go school run by Inseong Hwang, was present too. Inseong was promoting and selling his two books: Trouble Master 1 and 2. The KittyGo stand attracted people curious about the cute Go-playing robot, and there was a special EGC discount running throughout the event. And finally, GoFactory presented a selection of unique (and extra cute!) Go-themed accessories, along with playing equipment.

The EGC2025 Team would like to say a big thanks to all of our exhibitors, it was a delight to see the breadth of creativity and originality in these Go-themed businesses. If you haven’t visited their tables yet, now’s the time! And if you missed them altogether, you can still check them out online. More info:

KittyGo presentation at EGC2025! 🤩

Perhaps the cutest Go-playing robot has arrived at the European Go Congress! Accompanied by Diána Kőszegi 2p and Kim Seungjun 9p, the robot may look cute, but it can play up to a professional level or stronger!

During a presentation at EGC 2025, the robot showed off its skills at precisely picking up and placing the stones, as well as a huge variety of functions. It can play against you at any level you ask, it can help you solve tsumego, you can play against other people with KittyGo robots around the world or connect to Go servers to give you a realistic impression of playing against a person while you play online!

Aimed especially at helping children learn and develop their passion for Go, the robot can also help you train by playing from custom positions or replaying classic games from history.

Take a look at these photos from the presentation!

Poland win the Pandanet Go European Team Championship! 🏆🇵🇱

Last Sunday we saw Mateusz Surma 3p on stage accepting the European Championship trophy from his compatriot and 1983 Champion, Janusz Kraszek. This evening, the Polish team, with Mateusz at the helm, sailed to victory in the finals of the Pandanet Go European Team Championship! After the league round, played between October 2024 and May 2025, Poland scraped their way into the finals. Entering fourth of the four teams, they pulled out their finest performances when it mattered most. In the third and final round this Tuesday 29th July, they soundly defeated the Czech team 4-0 to seal their win.

Ukraine secured second place, while Czechia finished third and France had to settle for fourth. This is the first time that Poland has ever won the Team Championship, and they certainly chose the right year to do it! So far, the Warsaw EGC has hosted the largest go tournament ever held in Poland, crowned the second ever Polish European Champion, and now sees the Polish squad claim the title of strongest team in Europe. What could be a better reward to the EGC organisers, and better thanks for a fantastic Congress?

🏆 Congratulations to Mateusz Surma 3p 🇵🇱 – the New European Champion! 🏆

What a week it’s been at EGC 2025 in Warsaw! Not only did we break a 21-year-old record for tournament participation yesterday, but we’re celebrating a truly unforgettable and symbolic victory: Mateusz Surma becomes European Champion for the very first time – and does so right here, at home, in Poland!

For us as organizers, this Congress has been filled with success stories and proud moments - but nothing could top seeing a Polish player lift the trophy in front of a home crowd. The emotions were especially strong during the awards ceremony, when Mateusz Surma stood on stage alongside Janusz Kraszek - the very first, and until now, the only European Champion from Poland, who won the title all the way back in 1983. To witness both champions, from different generations, sharing the stage at a Polish EGC was an incredible and truly symbolic moment for Polish Go.

Huge congratulations to all our winners:
🥇 1st Place: Mateusz Surma 3p 🇵🇱
🥈 2nd Place: Valerii Krushelnytskyi 7d 🇺🇦
🥉 3rd Place: Artem Kachanovskyi 3p 🇺🇦
🏅 4th Place: Stanisław Frejlak 2p 🇵🇱

Thank you to all the players, supporters, and volunteers who made this Congress historic in every sense. We’re so proud to share these moments with the whole Go community.

Polish Go history is being written at EGC 2025! 🥳🎉

WE DID IT! 💪🏻🤩 The 5th “China Town” Weiqi Cup sets new Polish record! 🏆

The final round of the 5th "China Town" Weiqi Cup is underway! 🏆This isn’t just any side tournament - it’s officially a record breaker! As organizers of EGC 2025 here in Poland, we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together with you, the amazing Go community. Until now, the biggest tournament ever held in Poland was back in 2004, with 558 players. Today, we’ve smashed that 21-year-old record: 562 players are battling it out in the Weiqi Cup!

Thank you to everyone who made this unforgettable moment possible. Whether you’re playing, cheering, or helping to organize, you’re part of Polish Go history! Let’s enjoy the last round and celebrate this milestone together! 🇵🇱🎉

The 5th “China Town” Weiqi Cup kicks off at EGC 2025! 🎉

What a start to the weekend at the European Go Congress in Warsaw! Today, the 5th edition of the “China Town” Weiqi Cup launched with an impressive 546 players taking part in the first round. With a total prize pool of €12,000, the stakes are high and the excitement even higher!

Before the games began, players gathered for a short but enthusiastic opening ceremony. Tomasz Andrzejewski, President of the Polish Go Association and EGC Head Organiser, and Krzysztof Grabowski, the Congress’ Chief Referee, welcomed everyone and made sure the rules were clear for all participants. Once the formalities were over, the competition began in earnest – boards set, clocks clacking and focus levels sharp.

This is one of the most anticipated side events of the Congress, attracting players of all strengths for a chance at glory (and, of course, those generous prizes). Whether you’re chasing the top spot or just soaking up the atmosphere, we wish everyone good luck and lots of fun on the board. Enjoy the thrill of the tournament and make the most of your time at EGC 2025!

Snaps from the EGC 2025! 📷🤳🏻

This week we opened a Google Drive where our Congress participants are free to upload the photos they’ve taken so far. As the organising team, we only get one perspective – it’s so great to see what everyone has been getting up to! Take a look at these photos; one of our guests, Jil from the UK, found a lovely spot in the nature surrounding the hotel. What an adventure!

Jil shares the directions here: “Cross the dual carriageway at the end of Skalnicowa. Go up a slope, across the high cycle track, and down the other slope. Follow along a bit and there’s a narrow track on the right, down a steep bank. Follow that. At a junction, the right-hand track goes to the Vistula River.”

We would suggest taking a look at a map first, and make sure you prepare well for a little hike. But maybe you can find your way to the river, too! Jil shared some lovely feedback, and we’re very glad to see our guests enjoying their time in Warsaw. A restful walk in nature is just what we all need to come back to the goban refreshed!

Chess + Go at the EGC 2025! 🔥

The rivalry between chess and Go is eternal, right? Fans of each are sure that their chosen game is more complex, more fun and better for your brain. Maybe you’ve played both before and enjoyed it? Well, too bad. You have to choose!

Or maybe not: at this year’s EGC, Chess + Go featured again as a hotly anticipated side tournament. In teams of two, players play a game of pair Go and pair chess simultaneously, with each person playing one move of each game in turn. 22 pairs took part, with combined levels ranging from 11-kyu to 2-dan. The games are always super chaotic, with players swapping places between the two boards frantically. As a special quirk of the rules, chairs are expressly forbidden!

What do you think, did you believe that chess and Go could be played side by side? At EGC 2025 even miracles happen!

Guest lectures at the EGC 2025 in Warsaw! 🤩

This year’s European Go Congress isn’t just a chance to prove how much your go-playing skills have improved since last year, it’s also an opportunity to learn something new! We invited guests from all over the world to help Congress participants to review their games, and find new inspiration to improve. This Monday and Tuesday, our famous guests gave lectures to packed rooms of Congress-goers. Preparations were hastily made behind the scenes to relocate the lectures to a larger room, as eager listeners even sat on the floor on Monday to take part!

Did you know that you can understand go better just by watching Squid Game? Inseong Hwang 8d showed us how; explaining the lessons we can take from each episode of the show. In Hirohito Toyoda 3p’s lesson, he took centuries old go proverbs that we’ve all heard a thousand times and used AI to see if they still hold up.

We are working hard to make and upload recordings of the lectures, watch this space for more information.

Many more lectures will follow over the course of the EGC, take a look at the daily schedule to see what’s coming up!
