"In 1950, my father was a student at Edwardes College Peshawar, studying F.Sc Engineering. He shared a desk with a quiet, thoughtful boy with ruffled hair named Ahmad Shah, who had a peculiar habit - he wrote poetry. At the time, my father, being focused on other things, had little interest in verse and poetry. Whenever Ahmad Shah would excitedly show him a new poem, my father would wave it off, saying, "Oh not again, leave it, maybe some other time!" At his age, he had scant understanding of poetry!
Little did my father know that the boy sitting next to him would later be known to the world as Ahmad "Faraz", one of the greatest poets of our time. Years later, when they would meet and remember college days, my father would apologetically admit, "I'm sorry I didn’t realise I was sitting next to a legend!" And they would share a good laugh, remembering how my father once dismissed the very poetry that would win millions of admirers." (Ali Jan)
