Marcos announces P300M for bridges rehab

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, took time out from his busy executive schedule to pay a visit and conduct an inspection on the extent of damages to the two bridges that connect the western parts of Tarlac City.

While repairs are being done along Aquino and Agana bridges, which both collapsed with 20-hour interval during the onslaught of “habagat” last week, the president said he will download P300 million for the restoration of the bridges.

“To fast-track construction works, we will be downloading P300 million to the local government because this is a local bridge... it will be properly funded if we go to the local government,” Marcos said.

He added that he ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fast-track the construction of a temporary steel bridge in Agana to lessen the burden of commuters going to and from the western side of the city.

Both Aquino and Agana bridges connect several western barangay (villages) of Tarlac City, including five other municipalities of the province and toward Pangasinan.

Over the weekend, a portion of the Aquino Bridge, which connects Tarlac City and the town of Gerona, fell due to heavy monsoon rains.

A day later, the bridge next to it — the Agana Bridge — also partially collapsed, as a result of which an SUV with five passengers fell off into the raging waters. One managed to escape while four others were swept along with the vehicle.

On the same day, two bodies positively identified as passengers of the vehicle were recovered in separate areas in Pangasinan, while the other two are still missing. As of this writing, the SUV has been found and is being hauled out of the river several meters between the two bridges.

During the president’s visit, the DPWH reported that the temporary steel bridge in Agana will be opened to pedestrians in one week, while light vehicles will be allowed on the second week.

“The local government and national government will help to hasten the opening of the bridges. Like I said, I hope in two weeks they assure me that in two weeks there will already be light traffic allowed across Agana Bridge,” the president said.

The swift action aims to restore economic recovery and accessible transportation pending permanent rehabilitation and upgrading and updating of the bridge’s structural integrity.

Marcos highlighted that the 70-year-old post-war structure (Agana Bridge) gave way due to extreme weather conditions driven by climate change.

“This bridge has been standing since just after the war, so it is 70 years old,” President Marcos said.

“In the entire experience of the Philippines, it is only now that we have experienced this kind of rain and this kind of flooding because weather patterns are changing due to climate change. But never mind, we will continue to adjust,” he added.

Marcos was accompanied by Secretaries Vince Dizon of DPWH, Rex Gatchalian of Department of Social Welfare and Development, and Francisco Tiu Laurel of the Department of Agriculture; Tarlac Gov. Christian Yap; Tarlac 2nd District Rep. Cristy Angeles; and Tarlac City Mayor Susan Yap-Sulit.

Both Yaps expressed gratitude to the president for his immediate action and release of funding.

“The president’s visit is important to see for himself the situation of the bridges,” Governor Yap said.
