😭 ‘KUNG ALAM KO LANG, HINDI SANA AKO DINA-DIALYSIS 3 TIMES A WEEK.’ 💔
(If only I knew CKD, I am not doing dialysis 3x a week.)
Let me share the story. Let this serve as awareness to everyone.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing health crisis in the Philippines, affecting millions silently. 😔 A 2022 study revealed that CKD cases have risen to 35.94%—this is truly a SILENT KILLER. Early detection and proactive care are key.
Meet a young man, 26, engaged to be married. He was diagnosed with CKD secondary to IgA Nephropathy. He is now 29 and undergoing dialysis 3x a week. Why?
1️⃣ Panay kain ng chichirya (snack chips) na sobrang alat—every day!
2️⃣ Para makatipid sa pera at oras, meals prepared are frozen, preserved, and canned goods like hotdogs, beef loaf, corned beef, tocino, and chorizo.
3️⃣ Lack of awareness na too much salt is bad for the kidneys.
4️⃣ Blood pressure increased at age 23 (140/90 → 150/90) and was left untreated.
5️⃣ Self-medicated with pain killers whenever he felt discomfort.
💔 Lesson: High blood pressure must be monitored and treated. Kung hindi, kidney function will decline. Once kidney fails, dialysis becomes a lifetime routine—taking your time, money, and health away.
This is not a testimony. It’s a reminder: prevention is better than dialysis 3x a week. Sharing is caring.
Tips for CKD prevention, especially on a high-protein diet:
1️⃣ Balance Protein Intake – Stick to 1.2–2.0g per kg body weight. Prioritize lean proteins like chicken, fish, tofu, eggs. Avoid too much red or processed meat.
2️⃣ Stay Hydrated – Drink 2–3 liters of water daily to help kidneys filter waste.
3️⃣ Limit Sodium – Keep sodium below 2,300 mg/day. Rinse canned foods like tuna before eating.
4️⃣ Monitor BP & Blood Sugar – Keep BP below 130/80 mmHg. Avoid excess sugar and processed carbs.
5️⃣ Avoid Excess NSAIDs & Supplements – Painkillers and unnecessary supplements strain the kidneys.
6️⃣ Regular Kidney Function Tests – Check creatinine, eGFR, and urine protein at least once a year.
7️⃣ Exercise Daily – Low-impact exercises like walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, and light resistance training are safe.
8️⃣ Avoid Dehydration – Monitor urine color; aim for light yellow.
9️⃣ Limit Alcohol & Smoking – Alcohol raises BP and damages kidneys. Smoking reduces blood flow to kidneys.
🔟 Be Cautious with OTC Medications & Supplements – Some herbal or slimming products can harm kidney function. Always check with your doctor.
1️⃣1️⃣ Watch for Early Symptoms – Fatigue, swelling, foamy urine, or frequent urination? Don’t ignore these signs! Early intervention saves lives.
💡 Remember: Your kidneys work hard for you every day. Protect them with healthy food, lifestyle, and regular check-ups. Prevention is always better than dialysis.
