He sold ice cream and bread on the street at 8 years old. He lost his first three fights. His own father told him to quit.

Mark "Magnifico" Magsayo grew up poor in Tagbilaran, Bohol, some days his family ate only once. He didn't listen to his father's advice to walk away from boxing.

In 2022, he shocked the world. Magsayo dethroned Gary Russell Jr., then boxing's longest-reigning champion, to become WBC featherweight world champion in his very first title shot.

One of the first things he did with the belt: buy his parents a home. The kid who was told to quit became the reason his family never has to worry again.

Islay Erika Bomogao comes from the Cordillera mountains, from Igorot blood, a people the Spanish could never conquer. But she wasn't born a fighter.

She was a timid, self-described pacifist who started out swimming, coming to combat sports late. She passed through wushu, jiu-jitsu, and silat before Muay Thai finally answered.

Before every bout, she bows for the Wai Kru, the fighter's prayer. That's the moment the quiet girl disappears.

She became the first Filipina Muay Thai world champion, rose to number one in the world, and remains unbeaten in ONE Championship.

The pacifist from the mountains was a warrior all along. Athletes are people first, and sometimes the fiercest ones start out as the gentlest.

He wanted to be a boxer. A bus accident changed that.

Before the accident, Andy Avellana dreamed of becoming a boxer. At 14 years old, a bus accident cost him his left leg.

He didn't walk away from sports. He found a different way to compete.

In 2006, Avellana took up para-athletics, specifically high jump, determined to stay in the game he loved.

He went on to represent the Philippines in both para-athletics and paratriathlon, competing at the 2012 London Paralympics. Athletes are people first, and sometimes losing one dream is what makes room for another.

She traded a comfortable future with Team USA for a chance to wear the Philippine flag. Today, she works in the adult entertainment industry.

Melissa Bulanhagui was one of America's brightest young figure skaters. She won U.S. junior bronze, captured Junior Grand Prix gold in Italy, earned senior bronze at the 2010 Nebelhorn Trophy, and had the funding and support that came with skating for Team USA.

In 2011, she gave it all up to represent the Philippines, the homeland of her parents from Batangas.

"I gave up all my funding, support and travel," she said.

The sacrifice paid off. She became a two-time Philippine national champion, won bronze at the Asian Open Trophy, and competed twice at the Four Continents Championships, becoming one of the most accomplished Filipina figure skaters ever.
Then her Olympic dream fell apart.

After publicly criticizing the Philippine Skating Union, she was suspended from the next national championships. Despite being the reigning national champion, she was not selected for the Philippines' final Olympic qualifying event. Melissa believed federation politics cost her the opportunity, while the federation said its decision was based on technical considerations.

She retired from competitive skating in 2015.

Today, she performs under the stage name Jada Kai, creating content on OF and appearing in adult films.

Her story isn't really about how she chose to rebuild her life after skating. It's about an athlete who gave up everything to represent the country of her family's roots, only to see her Olympic dream end not on the ice, but in a dispute with the very system she had placed her faith in.

In 1999, at a rice mill in South Cotabato, a young Isidro Vildosola saw his cousin's clothing caught in grinding machinery. He acted immediately to save him.

He succeeded, but lost his right arm in the process.

What happened next, nobody expected. Vildosola turned to para-athletics, becoming a national sprinter and competing at the 2012 London Paralympics.

He's since become a coach himself, mentoring the next generation. Athletes are people first, and sometimes the same instinct that costs you everything is the one that defines you.

He was a janitor. He couldn't even swim.

John "Rambo" Chicano became a father young, and needed work. He found a job as a helper and janitor at a bike shop just to support his daughter.

The shop owner turned out to be Melvyn Fausto, a national triathlon coach, who saw something in him nobody else had. There was just one problem: Chicano didn't know how to swim at all. He's said he was still nearly drowning during his early training. Fausto taught him from scratch, and within three months, he was competing.

He won silver at the 2017 SEA Games, finishing behind his own teammate. Two years later, racing at home in Subic, close to his native Olongapo City, he won gold in the men's individual triathlon at the 2019 SEA Games, then added a second gold in the mixed relay the very next day.

Athletes are people first, and sometimes the person who changes your life is just someone who happened to notice you.

She couldn't afford a taxi. So she pushed her own wheelchair instead.

Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta contracted polio at age 3. For years, getting anywhere she needed to go meant pushing herself, sometimes for kilometers at a time, whenever a taxi wasn't an option.

She became the Philippines' first-ever Paralympic medalist, winning bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games in powerlifting.

Even after that historic win, she's said she was once excluded from an athletes' village because para-athletes' entry fees weren't covered.

She competed at five Paralympic Games total, retiring in 2024 with 19 medals. Athletes are people first, and sometimes the hardest part isn't the competition, it's just getting there.

Danny Kingad, from Sadanga, Mountain Province, fell into a bad crowd after his father's death, dropping out of school twice and sometimes sleeping on the streets.

"I did not have anything then," he later admitted. "I did not even have martial arts."

His cousin, already a member of Team Lakay, introduced him to wushu in high school. Coach Mark Sangiao became a second father figure, guiding him both in the gym and in life.

Kingad slowly distanced himself from his old habits and rebuilt his path forward, eventually becoming one of the Philippines' most respected mixed martial artists.

His family never gave up on him, even when he resisted. Athletes are people first, and sometimes the toughest fight happens years before anyone's cheering.

They became world champions. Getting there was funded by donations, not the state.

PADS is the Philippines' first cross-disability adaptive dragon boat racing team, founded in Cebu in 2016. Paddlers include amputees, and athletes who are deaf or blind.

Despite winning multiple world titles in the Paradragon division, the team has repeatedly had to crowdfund and rely on community donations, including from overseas Filipino communities, just to afford travel to world championships.

"We really want to see our OFWs," team members have said, describing the support they've leaned on for years while state sports funding rarely reached adaptive programs.

A private sponsor only stepped in for the first time in 2026, backing their trip to the 15th IDBF Club Crew World Championships in Taiwan. Athletes are people first, and sometimes an entire team carries a country's flag on money raised one donation at a time.

She switched flags for the Philippines. The support promised to her never came.

Melissa Bulanhagui was a competitive Filipino-American figure skater who had already represented Team USA internationally. In 2011, she made the decision to switch allegiance to the Philippines instead, hoping to help grow the sport in her parents' home country.

She won the Philippine national title twice, in 2012 and 2013, by considerable margins.

Despite that, she says she never received the support promised to the country's best athletes. She paid for her own travel and equipment, and didn't even have a Philippine team jacket. She was never sent to a single Olympic qualifier.

She retired from competitive skating in 2015. Athletes are people first, and sometimes loyalty to a flag isn't matched by the system behind it.
