BLUEBERRIES SHOWED STRONG EFFECTS AGAINST CANCER CELLS IN LAB STUDIES
ANTHOCYANIN-RICH BLUEBERRY EXTRACT REDUCED CANCER-CELL VIABILITY BY MORE THAN 50% IN SOME LAB TESTS
Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins—plant pigments responsible for much of their deep blue-purple color.
In a 2015 laboratory study, researchers tested a purified anthocyanin-rich fraction from blueberry juice against three cancer cell lines: HeLa cervical cancer, A2780 ovarian cancer, and B16-F10 melanoma. (PubMed Central (PMC))
After 24 hours, the blueberry anthocyanin fraction reduced measured cell viability to:
HELA CERVICAL CANCER CELLS
45.9% viability
= 54.1% reduction
A2780 OVARIAN CANCER CELLS
52% viability
= 48% reduction
B16-F10 MELANOMA CELLS
56% viability
= 44% reduction
The researchers used an MTT cell-viability assay and identified multiple blueberry anthocyanins, including malvidin, petunidin, and delphinidin glycosides. (PubMed Central (PMC))
WHY IS THIS INTERESTING?
The study suggests that concentrated blueberry anthocyanins can interfere with the growth and survival of certain cancer cells under laboratory conditions.
But there is an important distinction:
THE STUDY USED PURIFIED, CONCENTRATED EXTRACTS — NOT WHOLE BLUEBERRIES EATEN BY PEOPLE.
The researchers themselves noted that additional research is needed before blueberry anthocyanin consumption can be considered capable of reducing cancer risk. (PubMed Central (PMC))
INSTEAD, ENJOY BLUEBERRIES AS PART OF YOUR DIET
You don’t need to eat blueberries as a cancer treatment.
Instead, enjoy fresh or frozen blueberries as part of a balanced diet.
Try adding them to:
• Oatmeal
• Greek yogurt
• Smoothies
• Salads
• Whole-grain cereal
• Homemade snacks
Blueberries provide anthocyanins, fiber, vitamin C, and other plant compounds that can contribute to an overall healthy eating pattern.
BOTTOM LINE
Blueberry anthocyanins showed promising antiproliferative effects against cervical, ovarian, and melanoma cancer cells in laboratory experiments.
The strongest effect in this experiment was seen in HeLa cervical cancer cells, where measured viability fell by 54.1% after 24 hours.
That does not mean eating blueberries will kill cancer cells in the human body. Human clinical research is needed to determine whether these laboratory findings translate into meaningful cancer benefits.
