It's been a great pleasure working alongside Direk Jenn. She stands out as a remarkable figure in the Bicol film landscape. Take Padamlรกgan (Night Light), her period drama for Cinemalaya 2025; it's a masterful blend of narrative fiction and experimental documentary, vividly capturing the essence of Bicolano culture and history. Her earlier short films, like "To Someplace" and "Ang Kapinunan Kan Mga Alon Sa Danay," have already garnered international recognition, showcasing her keen artistic vision and her incredible ability to tell evocative stories that resonate deeply with audiences. What makes working with Ma'am Jenn so rewarding isn't just her talent behind the camera, but also her deep knowledge of cinematic history, especially right here in the Bicol region. Her research on the Bichara family, detailed in "From Middle East to Bikol Land: The Bicharas and their Movie Houses," doesn't just preserve a vital part of our local film heritage, but it truly illuminates the foundational role this pioneering family played in establishing Bicol's cinema industry. This deep historical understanding undoubtedly enriches her filmmaking, allowing her to weave narratives that are both innovative and genuinely rooted in cultural authenticity. As the current moderator of the Ateneo Film Society, she's an incredibly supportive and inspiring presence, passionately nurturing the next generation of Bicolano filmmakers and encouraging them to tell their own compelling narratives through film.
