The term "tarรณk" in Bikol agriculture is to transplant. It is the process of planting rice on a field bed and as it grows and matures as a healthy rice plant, it gets transferred to a bigger field along with the rest of the rice plants for a careful and safe early growth for the crops. In agriculture, transplanting has been a common technique used by arborists, botanists, and farmers to make the plants survive and thrive in different weather and soil conditions. Those that have grown too big in their pots get transplanted to a bigger patch of soilโto make them grow bigger. Those that are easily infested with pests and have weak sapling bodies get protected from the harsh open-field conditions. Those that are in need of specific nutrients get nurtured and can be transplanted once they get healthier enough to be grown in the wilderness.
Much like transplanting, critical writing is a form of nurturing, protecting, and expanding one's view. Finding the points where ideas would clash, consider revising and reconcile with different techniques in writing and in their forms of art. Nurturing the ones that can be further improved, protecting the views and areas of discussion that should have been preserved, and expanding both the critic's and artist's view on the creation and how these forms of literature and art affect the culture and society we live inโand vice versa.
Critical writing exists because one understands the other's message. And those who have understood would want to give their own thoughts to help the other grow.
The goal of this workshop is to expand the space for cultural criticism in Bikol and its diverse forms through multiple mediumsโliterature and translation, music, visual art, film, and theater.
