The 2020 Palarong Pambansa, supposed to be the 63rd Edition to be held in Marikina has been canceled this year. DepEd will propose the cancellation of 2020 Palarong Pambansa subject to approval of the Palarong Pambansa board via ad referendum, according to Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla. The board is composed of DepEd officials, Philippine Sports Commission chairman, and Interior Secretary.

Story:
Dahil sa pangamba dulot ng coronavirus disease (Covid-19) sa bansa ay tuluyan ng kinansela sa huling pagkakataon para sa taong ito (2020) ang Palarong Pambansa. Bukod sa pag-apruba ng lokal na pamahalaan ng Marikina, Deped at Palarong Pambansa Board noong Marso para ikansela ang Palaro ay dahil na rin sa mauurong na pasukan ng klase sa mga paaralan sa Agosto o Setyembre sa taong ito.

Sa madaling salita ay walang Palarong Pambansa ngayong 2020. Wala pang ibang detalye kung mauurong sa 2021 ang pag-host ng Marikina para sa ika-63 taong edisyon ng Palaro o kung panghahawakan na ng Negros Occidental na i-host ang ika-63 edisyon ng Palaro, ang original na naka-iskedyul na Palaro sa taong 2021 kung susundin ang pattern na Luzon-Visayas-Luzon-Mindanao hosting rotation. Kung susundin ang ganitong pattern, maaaring mag-bid ang Marikina para mapili bilang host sa taong 2022 o kung pag-uusapan ng Board ay maaaring ang Marikina ay maging automatic host city sa 2022.

Marikina, the host of 2020 Palarong Pambansa is under NCR's Community Quarantine starting March 15, Sunday. As of this writing, Marikina postponed the Palaro in May but not canceled this year. Please stay tune for updates.

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino 'Marcy' Teodoro on Monday suspended indefinitely the 2020 Palarong Pambansa after the city recorded its first case of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

ANNOUNCEMENT

Nagkaroon ng briefing ang lahat ng barangay, paaralan at ospital sa Marikina sa pangunguna ni Marikina Mayor Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro kaugnay sa kumpirmadong kaso ng Covid-19 sa lungsod.

Ayon kay Marikina Mayor Marcy, sa loob ng tatlong araw mula ngayon ay magkakaroon ng massive disinfections sa lahat ng pribado at pampublikong paaralan sa buong Marikina. Napagpasyahan na ang 63rd Palarong Pambansa 2020 na gaganapin sa Mayo ay ipinagpapaliban upang siguraduhin ang kaligtasan/public safety ng lahat ng manlalaro mula sa iba't ibang bahagi ng bansa gayundin ang masusing pag-disinfect sa mga pasilidad na gagamitin sa Marikina na halos handa na sana para sa darating na Mayo.

Isa ang Marikina sa huling may kaso ng Covid-19 kung saan ang biktima ay naka-admit sa Medical City.

Manatiling nakaantabay para sa iba pang detalye at huling mga balita. Keep safe at siguraduhin ligtas ang lahat laban sa Covid-19.

Statement from the Deped Office of Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones, March 8, 2020:

In light of recent developments in COVID-19, DepEd is suspending all scheduled national and regional events involving students from different localities, such as the Palaro Regional Meets, until further notice (Regional athletic meets only; the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa in May will be upon the advice of the Palaro board).

However, as announced yesterday, we are proceeding with the National Festival of Talents (NFOT) and National Schools Press Conference (NSPC), since participants are already at the venue. Heightened precautions are being implemented at NFOT and NSPC, which include foregoing elements of the programs that can be avoided (such as parades, etc.).

Decisions on other DepEd activities shall await definitive advisory from the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) that we hope to receive tomorrow, to ensure informed, coordinated and proportionate response.
