The 6th ASEAN Schools Games commences with an opening ceremony on Sunday, November 30, 3:00 p.m. at the Marikina Sports Center.

Some 1,500 student athletes from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will be taking part in the event and compete in each of their respective sports disciplines.

Marikina, the host city, earlier announced the venues for each sporting event which comprises of Marikina Sports Center (Sta. Elena, Marikina) for Athletics, Volleyball, Tennis, and Swimming; Trevi Subdivision (Nangka, Marikina) for Badminton; Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (Concepcion I, Marikina) for Sepak Takraw; St. Scholastica’s Academy (Marikina Heights, Marikina) for Wushu; Marikina Convention Center (Concepcion II, Marikina) for Table Tennis; Marist School (Marikina Heights, Marikina) for Basketball; Rizal Stadium (Malate, Manila) for Gymnastics; Valley Golf and Country Club (Antipolo) for Golf.

In a statement, Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman said that the ASEAN Schools Games is a window for school athletes to exhibit their sporting talent, while primarily promising opportunities for cultural exchange and solidarity among student athletes within ASEAN.

“The ASEAN Schools Games promises an opportunity of solidarity among ASEAN youth through sports, and for school athletes to interact and engage in cultural exchange within ASEAN. Hosting this particular sporting event is a first for Marikina City and the Philippines,” said De Guzman.

“Hopefully, before this event is over, participants would have forged new friendship and camaraderie. Rest assured that we are leaving no stones unturned to ensure the success of this memorable event,” he added.

The ASEAN Schools Games is an annual sporting event among schools from various ASEAN countries. It was first held in Suphanburi, Thailand in 2009.
