Among the dishes she fondly remembers is Malaysia’s iconic Nasi Lemak, which she described as memorable for its rich flavors and distinctive spices experienced during her visit to the country. She also expressed appreciation for the local Pastil, particularly for its accessibility, affordability, and enduring presence in Filipino communities.

Her reflections highlight how food serves not only as nourishment, but also as a shared cultural language that connects ASEAN nations through tradition, identity, and hospitality.

The interview highlighted the upcoming PHTTE 2026, with the theme “Leading the Asian Wave: Advancing the Philippine Halal Ecosystem from Local Excellence to Global Sustainability,” scheduled on June 3–5, 2026 at SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang, Davao City. It also emphasized its continued mission of advancing halal trade, tourism, and inclusive economic growth in the Philippines.

Marilou Walohan Ampuan Champions Halal as a Way Toward Inclusive Growth and Ethical Living

Davao City, Philippines — Halal advocate and entrepreneur Marilou W. Ampuan, Founder and CEO of the Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo and the Universal Islamic Center (UIC), is calling for greater awareness and understanding of Halal — not just as a religious concept, but as a lifestyle built on integrity, safety, and sustainability.

“Halal is more than what’s permissible — it’s about living with honesty and ethics. It’s for everyone, not just Muslims,” Ampuan said.

With over a decade of experience promoting Halal education and entrepreneurship, Ampuan has worked with government agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Tourism (DOT) to make Halal part of mainstream trade and tourism.

She believes Halal can drive inclusive growth by helping small entrepreneurs access broader markets and encouraging ethical business practices.

“The key is education and collaboration,” she emphasized. “Halal is about health, honesty, and humanity. It’s inclusive.”

Ampuan envisions the Philippines becoming a Halal hub in Southeast Asia — integrating Halal principles into trade, tourism, and education.

“My hope is for Halal to be seen as a symbol of unity, trust, and prosperity for all Filipinos,” she said. “When we live Halal, we live for the good of everyone.”
