This biblical verse from the Book of Sirach can be translated in English as, “there is no riches above the riches of the health of the body”. The author of the book reminds us of the importance
of health in our lives. At Sacred Heart Center Sports Club, we take this understanding as part of our thrust. Sacred Heart Center Sports Club was established in 2004 as a venue for recreation, sports, and fitness. It was established as the Fr. Arthur Baur, S.J. Community and Youth Center, in honor of the late Fr. Arthur Baur, a Jesuit priest who was one of the primary builders of Sacred Heart Parish, and one proponent of the Sacred Heart Center. He had a special place in his heart for youths, whom he saw as the future of the country and the Church. It is a place for young people to build-up mind, body, and spirit – for holistic well-being, and pro-active use of their time. The Sports Club has sports and fitness facilities for all. The multi-purpose court is regularly used for basketball and badminton games and tournaments. Our fitness gym offers a wide range of exercise equipments, like benches, cycles, treadmills, and weights. We have billiard and ping-pong tables for rent. People can enjoy these facilities at reasonable rates. Many skills-enriching programs have been offered since its early years. Through the years, many have enrolled in the martial arts programs. The Sacred Heart Aikido Center – Cebu, an off-shoot of the Makati Aikido Club, is dedicated to the propagation of traditional Aikido. The program have consistently produced award winners in various competitions. A Weng Chun class is being administered by the Philippine Weng Chun Kuen Society – Rusmad System. Weng Chun is a Chinese martial art and form of self-defense that utilizes both striking and grappling but emphasizes more on close-range combat. The martial art was popularized by Yip Man, who was the instructor of the legendary martial artist and screen actor, Bruce Lee. Summer 2013 saw the introduction of Fencing, a graceful sport that also builds discipline, strategic and analytic skills, and camaraderie. We have offered a fencing class up to the present with the Cebu Fencing League providing instruction. Most recently, the martial art from Japan, Karatedo, is incorporated into the offerings of the Sports Club in 2016. Under the direction of veteran instructor, Roland Rondez, the Sacred Heart Karatedo Dojo is recognized by Milo.
