JESSICA PIDO DEFENDS THE KNIGHTS’ FORTRESS, 3-2

Like a knight defending a castle, Ateneo de Davao Blue Knights’ Jessica Pido shackled Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu ’s Magis Eagles to a scoreless second half at 3-2, emerging as the champions for Jesuit Athletic Meet 2018 futsal tournament at the Lux Oriens Gym, on October 30, 2018.

The first half started with the Magis Eagles on the offensive, as a goal by Regine Chua at seven minutes brought the Eagles to 1-0. The Knights recovered, as Alessandra Aquino struck the Eagles for a tie, at 1-1. The Knights’ Denise Angela Diamente followed with a strong kick-in from the side court that scored a point at the fourteenth minute, and gave them the lead, 2-1.

An equalizer by Itsuko Bacatan brought the score to 2-2 eighteen minutes in. The Knights, however recovered once again as Denise Diamente made a double play at the last minute, assisted by Julien Mirto, at 3-2.

In the second half, keeper Jessica Pido completely turned into an unstoppable force that immobilized the Eagles. Close call after close call was made by the offense-based Eagles, spearheaded by the quick Bacatan. The Eagles’ Hannah Barba entered and played both offense and defense, with keeper Alexandrea Gumilao defending her part too, turning the second half into a scoreless frenzy.

Injured players from the Eagles emerged at the second half, performing the best of their efforts, but the Knights defended their goal with Pido’s blocking, also taking advantages on the off shots made by the Eagles.

The swift Bacatan still persisted with Barba and Chua at the last minutes, a chance for another equalizer. The Eagles’ Judd Gonzales joined the Eagles’ persistent fight, only to be thwarted by Pido’s blocks.

Thrillingly reaching the conclusion, the last minutes were intense and could have either way, but the victory still went to the Knights, saved by Jesicca Pido’s impenetrable goalkeeping, and the first half lead.

“It was really hard, super hard,” Pido said, about her securing the victory for the Knights through impeccable second-half defense, “We just played with our hearts and work as a team talaga.”

This game is the Knights’ second meeting with the Eagles, after a defeat at the elimination stage. The Knights bounced back from the defeat, bringing home the title JAM 2018 Futsal champions.

“Actually, they tried their best. Natalo kami sa elimination against Cebu. Binigay nila ang lahat, all-out.(We lost in the eliminations against Cebu. They gave their best, all-out,” Rachelle Delos Reyes, the Knights’ coach, stated, “This is their last JAM, so there was no reservation.”

Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu finished as the first runner-up.

THE EVERLASTING SPIRIT OF MAGIS: Like Father, Like Daughter

Over the past five days of JAM, the spirit of magis has been predominantly manifested in every athlete – from every sport and every Jesuit school – and lived out in every game.

However, during the girls’ futsal match up between Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu and Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Joel Hamja, a parent who traveled all the way from Zamboanga in commitment to support his daughter, demonstrated how magis exemplifies, not only in the Jesuit athletes, but in those who raised them as well.

As Joel’s daughter, Joyce, was busy fulfilling her duties as AdZU’s goalkeeper, Joel was busy fulfilling his duties as a supportive father. Joel was seen holding up his phone for the entirety of the match, taking videos of his daughter’s performance.

Joel, who also accompanied his daughter to Davao during a previous JAM, explained how, “Every time my daughter competes, I take videos during the game just so I can give her some tips because I was a football player as well, during my high school days in Ateneo de Zamboanga University.”

When asked about his utmost dedication in supporting his daughter’s athletic endeavors, Joel noted how his presence in Joyce’s games gives her moral boosts – giving him no choice but to attend every single one of Joyce’s games, no matter the distance.

As an AdZU alumnus himself, Joel is living proof that once the spirit of magis is imprinted into an Atenean’s heart, it remains steadfast for years on end.

PARK, ANTONIO BAG FIRST PLACE IN JAVELIN THROW

As the sun was just about to rise, athletes for the javelin throw were already warming up for the final round of the event. This athletics event requires the ability to judge angle, distance and speed as athletes throw the spear with maximum force within the marked area.

Luis David Antonio of Ateneo de Manila and May Ki Joy Park of Scared Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu both captured gold medal of their respective divisions in the final day of the Jesuit Athletic Meet on October 30, 2018 in Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu.

Antonio threw at 42.98 meters landing him the top spot, while Ateneo Hearters Richie Cyrus Gerenia (35.05 meters) and Vince Adrian Rojo SHS (31.58 meters) won second and third place respectively.

Park threw at 28.30 meters to win first place over Leika Angeli Gamalo of Sacred Heart School who threw at 19.52 meters. A fellow Ateneo Hearter, Sofia Nina Ilagan threw at 13.63 meters landing her the third spot.

When asked about her strategy in today’s event, Park said, “My coach told me to just listen to him and apply everything. You just have to follow, listen and apply. I always follow my coach.”

The strategy has indeed worked. Park also won first place in the girls division of discuss throw and shot put.

JAM Prayer Day Six
Prayer for School Heads and Administrators

Laudato si’, mi Signore!
Praise be to you, Father of our souls. Our individual and collective gratitude do no justice to give you honor.
Thank you for gifting us with fair weather, good food and great companionship and friendship during these six days of the Jesuit Athletic Meet. We are on the last day of the JAM and we raise to you for your guidance, benefaction and protection our beloved school heads and administrators. Keep them close to the Sacred Heart of Your Son, Jesus. Make them always aware of their great vocation to lead their respective schools to your greater glory. May by their example they lead their faculty members and staff closer to the desire of St. Ignatius to be “fire that kindles other fires” so they may together “set the world on fire”. Keep them always aware of your abiding love and magnanimity. So that the more they give, the more the world would be a little less cold and a little less dark, everyday.
AMEN.
