The Whangarei Marsden Wheelers Road Cycling Club committee have regretfully made the decision that they are not in the position to host/hold the Fred Ogle Memorial & Lynley MacDonald Cycling Event in 2023.

We know that this announcement will be disappointing to cyclists who have the event on their radar.

The committee hope that they will be in the position to host the event in 2024.

Regards
Whangarei Marsden Wheelers Road Cycling Club Committee

Unfortunately one of the event participants has unpacked his kit and discovered he dropped his black Garmin 530 bike computer. We have been out and checked the carpark & grass area for him.

If you’ve discovered you have two bike computers can you contact us and we’ll connect you with the other rider.

Thanks

Some riders aren't always able to stay for the presentation. The riders doing the 12.5k and 25km event are often finished well ahead of the main group. As an event organiser sometimes we have to do the medal presentations on other days.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being able to surprise Ruben Leslie at ACTIV8 NORTHLAND at the end of his Parafed Northland gym session. Ruben rode in the 12.5km event on Sunday it was his first road ride and his first cycling event. Ruben has CP so rides a trike. His coach Kerry Reyburn rode with him.

I asked Ruben a few questions after presenting him with his winners medal. I asked him 3 questions - we missed recording the answers to the first 2 but the answer to the third question is in the comments:
- What was the best things about the event?
He told me that it was that he'd gotten up to 40km an hour on the bike.

- What was the hardest thing about the event?
He told me it was the hills ... they just kept coming. He had wanted to stop but he didn't.

- I asked if he'd come back and ride again next year?
He wasn't sure and thought that someone else should have the opportunity to win the 12.5km next year. I suggested maybe he come back and do the 25km ... you'll have to watch the video in the comments below to hear his answer.

This event isn't just about the people who can do the 50 and 110km events, it's an inclusive event for everyone. Thanks for being part of the 2022 event Ruben.

Great effort from Whangarei Marsden Wheelers Road Cycling Club members Kyren Andrew and Kurt Coetzee on the tandem in the 50km event. And great see see new trike rider Ruben Leslie doing his first ever road ride, taking a big up hill and a technical down hill in the 12.5km event. Both riders had family at the event to cheer them on, which was awesome to see.

Thanks to Arwen Bike Northland for these photos from yesterday’s event. More coming soon.
