Fridaynui 3 July Club Night
Open Mic ... and then ....
Local legend XRVR and Radar Angel featuring Danny Webster on vocals and songwriting, Bryan Tabuteau on synths and programming, Saz Scanlan beating the drums and Josh Buckler playing saxophone. They have been performing together for near on ten years, and describe themselves as:
“Hailing from Te Whanganui-a-Tara, we are a four-piece synthfoolery ensemble who blend industrial grit with lush nostalgic sounds from the dawn of the digital age, all with a lavish theatricality and pop sensibility that never fails to get your limbs thrashing. Our songwriting draws on themes of dark, esoteric futurism (or futurist esotericism?), tempered by a very present concern for the preservation and celebration of nature and the human spirit”.

FRIDAYNUI 5 JUNE
Sam Manzanza is back in Town
You can feel the Afrobeat reverberating throughout the hall everytime Sam hits the stage ... and he hits it hard. “You won’t have to go to the gym’ is his mantra as he exhorts the audience to get up onto the dance floor. Here is a great character who rerpresents his culture with passion whether his stage is a music festival, a cultural festival, a street performance or one of the many venues he visits year in, year out. Based out of Wellington, you wouldn’t be surprised to find him performing anywhere in the country or indeed in Australia. For this trip to Whanganui, Sam is bringing a new band with him. The rhythm section of Peter Hamilton (bass guitar), Tim Key (electric guitar) and Jason Mackwood (drums) will keep the music rocking’. Linda Joy joins Sam on the front line playing trumpet and singing.
That is what you can expect at this Fridaynui Club Night. Warming up the stage will be the usual suspects and undoubtedly some fresh talent when the doors open for the celebrated Open Mic that kicks off at 7pm. Make sure you arrive early to get a good seat, or to put your name on the white board that lists the performances on the night.

FRIDAY NUI
The Hurricane Blues Kick Off NZ Music Month

Look at the website of nzmusicmonth and read “we clebrate NZ music everyday but in May, we turn it up”. Here in Whanganui, the first Friday of the month is Fridaynui, and we always turn it up. This Friday is 1 May, and it is fitting that we kick off NZ Mujsic Month with New Zealand legends Hurricane Shayn Wills and Freddy Limbert (known as The Hurricane Blues) with guest drummer Rick Cranson.
All three of these world class musicians are busy with gigs in their own towns (Freddy in Raglan, Shayn on Waiheke Island and Rick in Wellington) so it’s a real treat for them marry up their calendars and book a series of dates and take their music all over the country. They relish any chance to catch up and play together and this comes across in their performance. They create a real party atmosphere so get ready for the best night of live blues this year or quite possibly any year. These boys aren’t coming for a good time; they are bringing one with them!
The doors open at 7, with local musicians coming forward to play on the famous stage and entertain the ‘party faithful’ in an open mic that that fills the hall with cheers and laughter. For those coming for the first time, the club operates a ‘bring your own’ food and drink policy, is family friendly and dedicated to providing a safe space where it is ‘all about the music’. Come down, support live music, make and meet friends and have a great night out.
