Alda Rezende presents an intimate trio performance at the Undercurrent, reimagining the iconic Brazilian repertoire of Clube da Esquina through a jazz-inflected and improvisational lens. With a voice known for its warmth, tone, and emotional depth, she brings a personal and contemporary reading to songs by Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges, and their collaborators. Joined by two of Wellington’s most distinctive musicians Noel Clayton on guitar and Duncan Haynes on piano, the trio explores spacious, responsive arrangements where Brazilian songwriting meets jazz interplay, shaped by the intimate, listening-focused atmosphere of Undercurrent’s Sunday afternoon series.

Tyson Smith likes hats (and is rarely seen without one). He has also enlisted some of Welly's finest to join him, though they're responsible for their own headpieces.

With Blair Latham on Sax, Hikurangi Shaverien-Kaa on drums and Elijah Mulheron on bass. Expect a range of exciting twangy, jazzy sounds!

26/05/2026

Sonny Rollins - one of the greatest tenor saxophonists in the history of jazz - has passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the sound of modern music forever.

Wellington had the rare privilege of witnessing The Colossus in 2011, performing a rare, one-off concert at the Michael Fowler Centre. His historic quartet included bassist Bob Cranshaw, drummer Kobie Watkins, percussionist Sammy Figueroa, and guitarist Peter Bernstein.

"He had an old-man walk ... But as soon as he put that tenor saxophone to his lips, the hip difficulty seemed to disappear, he straightened and blew and sounded as he did when he was 30 or 40 or 50." – Simon Sweetman, Stuff

"Before bluebeat, ska and reggae, there existed the sun-drenched, clichéd land of bananas, coconuts and a hammock attached to every palm tree, and that is what Rollins and company gave us; a redolent reverential revisit to the Caribbean." – Colin Morris, The Dominion Post

For those lucky enough to be in the MFC that night, it remains unforgettable.

Pictured: The Astor Piazzolla Experience with Revenge Tango

Astor Piazzolla was more than a composer—he was a revolutionary of tango. Born in Argentina and deeply connected to Buenos Aires, he transformed a traditional genre into a powerful, modern, and universal expression, blending tango with jazz and classical music.

It is precisely this legacy that Revenge Tango, from Argentina, brings to life in a powerful and immersive tribute, redefining the boundaries of contemporary tango. Formed by Argentine musicians on piano and bandoneón, the duo offers a raw, dynamic, and deeply expressive interpretation of Astor Piazzolla’s work, blending written composition with improvisation and the energy of live performance.
