Mulled Wine Concerts is pleased to announce that our organizer, Mrs Mary Gow has - in the King’s Birthday New Zealand Honours List announced today - been awarded the King’s Service Medal (KSM) for her services to music.

Mrs Mary Gow is a concert pianist who holds BA and BMus degrees from Victoria University of Wellington. She is the organiser of the Mulled Wine Concerts, a group which has the objective of bringing classical and jazz music to audiences in Kapiti, Marlborough and the Wairarapa and encouraging young people to participate and enjoy this music. Since 2006, Mulled Wine Concerts has organised 120 concerts featuring mainly classical and some jazz musicians. The concerts are widely advertised and much appreciated, since admission prices are kept as low as possible, enabling audiences to enjoy first rate music without the costs of attending events in the capital.

Mary Gow was born in Lower Hutt and attended St Oran's College. After completion of her degrees at Victoria University, she studied piano and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, later making her home in the Belgian capital where she had a successful career performing and teaching music. She continues to be responsible for putting on two important concerts there: the Brussels Carol Concert and a Children's Concert featuring The Snowman. Both events have for many years supported Belgian
medical charities. She returned to New Zealand in 2006 and now lives on the Kapiti Coast.

A VERY SPECIAL PIANIST RETURNS TO NEW ZEALAND:
MULLED WINE CONCERTS PRESENTS NIKOLAI SARATOVSKY

Nikolai Saratovsky is an internationally acclaimed Russian concert pianist with an extraordinary repertoire. Mary Gow, organiser of the Mulled Wine Concerts series discovered Saratovsky in 2018 when he played in Brussels as a young pianist after succeeding in several important piano competitions in Europe. "I was amazed by his virtuosity" says Gow, a concert pianist herself, "He not only had a love for the music, he had all the technical skill-set you need to express yourself fully on the piano". She told him she came from New Zealand and he then told her that he and his Japanese-born wife had always dreamed of visiting New Zealand! As Gow notes, "from there, it was a short step to discussing possibilities..."

His effect on audiences here was remarkable - everyone who heard him knew that they were seeing and hearing something special. Since then, audiences around the world have come to the same conclusion. Saratovsky is now a professor of piano at the huge music school of Taiwan University where he combines teaching and academic research with his performing career, appearing in major concert venues worldwide. He also gives master-classes for aspiring international concert pianists.

Nikolai himself says this of his visits here: "This will be already the fifth time I am coming to NZ, and every time I feel extremely happy to come. I have lived and worked in Taiwan for more than 6 years. I have many memories from NZ. New Zealand is very different from Taiwan, and for me it's very important to "charge my inner spiritual battery". Coming to New Zealand is the ideal choice. Combination of meeting my lovely friends, conversations beside the fire place, fantastic sunsets, and music making makes this trip truly remarkable" He has chosen a wonderful set of music for his recital: "I chose this program by myself, because at this moment of life I prefer to play something that gives me a positive energy. I feel very compassionate with these music works, and they help me to recover during difficult times. I am happy to share this beautiful music with the audience, and I am looking forward for this fascinating musical journey". The concert will start with Western European romantic composers and conclude with pieces by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

Mary Gow feels that his visit to New Zealand represents a wonderful opportunity for Wairarapa audiences to catch a star already well known in Europe, Russia and the Far East. "This concert I regard as one of the most important and for the North Island, not-to-be-missed!" Mulled Wine Concerts will sponsor his appearance at the ANZAC Hall in Featherston on Saturday 13 June 2026.

FLUTE AND HARP: A MAY CONCERT IN FEATHERSTON
From the earliest times in human history, music has been made on flutes and harps. it would be impossible to say which came first - the sound produced by blowing over a hollow reed or pipe, or the sound of a string stretched over a sounding board. What can be said with confidence is that together, these instruments produce music of shimmering beauty which can have remarkable effects on humans who listen to it. Mulled Wine Concerts, the Kapiti-based music organisation run by Mary Gow will be producing a flute and harp concert on May 2 in Featherston which will delight local concert-goers.

Carolyn Mills has recently retired after 37 years as Principal Harpist of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Her passion for the harp has taken her all around the world and she has performed internationally in countless concerts and festivals. Carolyn is fascinated by the harp's unique qualities and its ability to weave a magic spell for so many. She is now a Certified Music Practitioner offering harp therapy to hospitals, care homes, and other healthcare settings. Her experiences have left her with no doubt about the special powers of the harp's resonance in healing the human spirit.

Bridget Douglas is Section Principal Flute of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and an artist-teacher in flute at the New Zealand School of Music - Te Kōkī. She graduated from Victoria and Otago Universities before travelling to the USA for postgraduate study on a Fulbright Graduate Award. In 2020 Bridget was awarded the CANZ (Composers Association of NZ) KBB Citation for Services to NZ Music.

Flute and harp combine in a luminous programme weaving together music of lyric beauty. From the serene mysticism of Hovhaness’s "The Garden of Adonis" and the shimmering soundscape of Eve de Castro Robinson’s "Pearls of the Sea" to folk-inspired gems by Ravel and traditional Celtic melodies such as "The Skye Boat Song" and "She Moved Through the Fair", the concert travels through many musical worlds. Baroque elegance from Marcello, Purcell, and Bach sits alongside Chopin’s sparkling "Variations on a Theme by Rossini" and a charming Praetorius set including "Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming". The programme also includes original works for solo harp by Carolyn Mills, showcasing the instrument’s rich colours and expressive range. Mulled Wine Concerts organiser, Mary Gow is excited by the prospect of bringing such spellbinding music to a Wairarapa audience. "I'm really looking forward to it", she says "It will surely make for an afternoon to remember!"
