Nau mai ngā hua o te tira hōu ki tēnei huringa tau 40 o Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts ki Te Whanganui-a-Tara, 2026 - kia nui, kia hāwere ai! He mahi auaha nō tāwāhi, he toi kairangi nō Te Moananui-a-Kiwa, he waiora ki tō tātou whenua... he orotahi - kia kotahi tonu te pūmanawa e!

Our tuakana Festival, the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts opened last celebrating 40 years of the extraordinary! For this milestone year, the Festival honours iconic works from our past alongside bold new commissions from award-winning Māori and Pasifika artists, and welcome international artists whose work brings deeper understanding and awe-inspiring sounds, sights, tricks, and delights.

This weekend was filled with the incredible works of MĀ and 'Mythosoma' by Body Island. Don't miss the last show of 'Waiora Te Ūkaipō - The Homeland' plus the upcoming performances of Rob Ruha with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 'TEIWA', the inspiring story of Fonotī Pati Umaga in 'Music Portrait of a Humble Disabled Samoan' and 'Ā Mua' presented by Chamber Music New Zealand featuring artists Tina Makereti and Riki Gooch.

“It’s going to be such a platter of sound and reo, and having te reo Māori be the vehicle that carries the wairua of those kupu – for me it’s just so delicious”

Under the dynamic creative direction of Ngapaki and Teina Moetara, comes 'ORO MĀIA' - a soulful te reo Māori tribute to the poems of Dr. Maya Angelou.

ORO MĀIA - Koia ko te hanumitanga o te puoro, te toi kupu me te whakaari e whakatinana mai ai ngā ruri whakahirahira a Tākuta Maya Angelou ki te reo Māori.

Featuring as part of this year’s Wellington Jazz Festival, ORO MĀIA will be spoken, sung, and scored in te reo Māori by some of Aotearoa’s leading wāhine artists - Maisey Rika, Miriama McDowell, Mere Boynton, Erena Koopu, Tuakoi Ōhia, and Maarire Brunning-Kouka (MĀ). ORO MĀIA will also feature a captivating live soundtrack by 2024 commissioned artist MĀ fusing contemporary soul, jazz, and funk.
