The news of ultra trail running have been really busy lately!
You've all probably read last month about the clash between WAM and UTMB about organising Ultra's in Whistler.
Gary Robbins, organiser of the Whistler Alpine Meadows (WAM) trail running events, which were held at Whistler from 2016 to 2022 by his organization Coast Mountain Trail Running (CMTR), had been systematically pushed out by Vail Resorts-owned Whistler Blackcomb.
Robbins said Vail Resorts’ poor communication and new safety and logistical requirements led to the demise of the WAM events, and he inferred these issues and new policies likely stemmed from an orchestrated collusion between the Ironman-UTMB organization and Vail Resorts to supplant his race with a new UTMB World Series event.
From my point of view, this is not good. Sure, i don't know the full story and I tried to read both side of the story.
We can't be happy with what UTMB is trying to achieve. I undertand that trail running is developing quickly and it's so good to see more excitement about it.
But, f..., UTMB don't need to control the whole ultra trail circuit with UTMB World Series. On their website it says, this is the only access to the UTMB Mont-Blanc. Ah ah, what a marketing!
I mean i didn't have anything against them. They do their thing, we do ours. But that Whistler story doesn't sound good.
So that was great to see last week that 9 independent ultra running races have organized to form the World Trail Majors in 2024. Good on them!

Please read both article from Brian Metzler in Trail Runner magazine. He summed up pretty well the situation.

Nine prominent races, including the Black Canyon Ultras 100K in Arizona, launch the new circuit with a points series and prize money.
