Kia ora athletes, parents, and supporters,
Due to adverse weather conditions and a worsening surf forecast overnight, we have made the decision to adjust the course for tomorrowβs NZ Schools Triathlon to ensure the utmost safety of all participants, while still allowing everyone to compete in a full triathlon experience.
Whatβs changing:
The Triathlon and Aquathlon swim will now take place in Pilot Bay, where conditions are sheltered and calm.
The swim will be a point-to-point course, with the swim exit at the northern end of Pilot Bay.
Athletes will then complete an approximately 400m run to Transition 1 (T1), where their bikes will be located (all barefoot)
Transition 2 (T2) remains unchanged (important when riding from T1 to end of T2 it is a neutral/no passing zone)
This adjustment is critical to ensure athlete safety given the deteriorating surf conditions at the original swim location.
Important logistics:
T1 will only hold bikes for the race that is about to take place, there will be no allocated racks by race number
Announcements will be made throughout the morning advising when athletes need to meet at T2 and move their bikes to T1 ahead of their race.
We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we make these changes in the best interests of all athletes. Our priority is to provide a safe, enjoyable event for everyone involved.
Further updates and instructions will be communicated on the day. Please see schedule and maps with incorporated changes. We kindly ask that you do not email through questions this evening. Any queries can be raised on the morning of the event via your school coaches or sport coordinators, and we will address them there.
Thanks for your understanding,
Anna Russell
