500,000 people a year are told the same thing after nerve damage: recovery is slow, and there are no guarantees.
Science is starting to challenge that.
Researchers at the University of Malaya investigated Lion's Mane mushroom extract on peripheral nerve injury. The results were striking — the treated group regained full limb function up to a week earlier than untreated controls, with no adverse effects reported at any point during the study.
The mechanism is centred on Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) — the protein responsible for neuron survival, repair, and regeneration. Lion's Mane contains bioactive compounds called hericenones and erinacines that directly stimulate NGF production, promote axonal regrowth, and reduce inflammation at the injury site. Crucially, these compounds can cross the blood-brain barrier to reach the central nervous system directly.
The same NGF pathway has since been studied in Alzheimer's, neurodegeneration, and long-term cognitive decline — with consistent results across multiple independent trials.
