2021 EVENT CANCELLATION
Thanks to everyone who enquired about the running of this year's event - we appreciate your interest.
We herewith wish to confirm that we have made the call to not proceed with the running of the 2021 North Range Trio event, which we had hoped to stage at the end of August.
This has not been an easy decision, but after weighing up the risks of hosting the event under the current conditions (explained below) we, unfortunately, would not be able to run the event this year.
The continued risk of Covid-19
The post-Covid event space is a very different animal from what it was back in 2019. While we are at the moment extremely lucky in New Zealand to have a level of freedom to host mass gatherings, virtually unfathomable in most of the rest of the world, the reality is that globally the pandemic is still raging. With winter approaching, our Covid-free status can at best be described as fragile.
It is difficult - and risky - to stage an event within the context of a global pandemic that can, at any stage and at short notice, close down events. With the North Range Trio being a point to point race that involves the mass transport of participants to the start, these risks are even greater, as we would be unable to adapt the event format to accommodate even a Level 2 lockdown.
As an tiny event organiser we operate on such small margins that we simply cannot carry the risk of a Covid-related cancellation, particularly in an environment where participants increasingly expect events to carry a large part of the financial burden of an event cancellation.
Construction on North and South Range Roads
Beyond the Covid risks, a more practical challenge to our event is the continued and extensive wind farm construction work taking place along South Range Road, making it impossible to run the the Catchment Ultra within the restrictions imposed by the health and safety regulations of the construction site. In addition, North Range Road is in the process of being upgraded and developed to serve as an access route for the South Range construction works, which adversely impacts on the running of the North Range Traverse as well.
While each of the above challenges is enough to make it difficult to stage this year's event, the combination of the two simply pushes it into the too hard basket, and we therefore regrettably will not be going ahead this year.
We trust you will understand the reasons for our cancellation and wish you all the best in your other running endeavours.
Thank you for your support - we hope to run into you somewhere on the roads and trails.
