Accomodation ideas during the Aoraki Classic in Omarama from 28th Dec to 4th Jan.

1. Free camping at the Ahuriri Bridge DOC camp about 2kms from town. There are toilets and a superb swimming hole. You will need a full camping kit.
2. The gliding camp. You will need a tent or caravan. It will be busy but the facilities are great. See my post above this one.
3. Top 10 camping ground. Cabins and tent sites. Be in quick as this camp is busy around New Year.
4. Some pilots have batches or land to camp on. Ask around.
5. There are quite a few motels in Omarama. You will need to book now so check out motels in Omarama online.
6. There are several camps on the shores of Lake Benmore about 15 mins out of town.
Meet at Dirapuk (24 Black Peak Road Omarama) 9am on the 28th for a comp breifing.

The dates are set for the Aoraki Classic 2023!

28th Dec 2022 to 4th Jan 2023.

Same format as last year. A relaxing competition where flying, holiday activities and family are included. Best 3 flights over 8 days in the McKenzie Basin. Scored using XContest. More info in the next Airborn.

Also as we did last year, the Sterling Big Sky will be held on a suitable day during the week.

Rules for the Aoraki Hang Gliding Classic 2022
1. The Aoraki Classic is a Hang Gliding competition. The focus is on flying, friendship and family ~ let's make this an enjoyable and inclusive week for all involved.
2. All pilots must be a current member of the NZHGPA and abide by the associations reglations.
3. Registration is a New Years party at Rod and Marney's crib, Dirapuk ~ 24 Black Peak Road, Omarama. Entry ~ $20 payment into the Magic Road fund please.
Please text Rod on 0274344822 if you wish to register before New Years Eve and we will add your name to the competition spread sheet.
3. All flights must be flown between 1st Jan and 8th Jan 2022.
4. All take offs are to be in the Mackenzie Basin area. Defined by Burkes Pass to the North, Lindis Pass to the South and Otematata to the East.
5. You may take off any time and make as many flights as you like.
6. Foot launch and towing take offs are both permitted.
7. Scoring will be done using Xcontest 'Kiwi Rules'. https://www.xcontest.org/newzealand/rules/
a) XC flight with 3 turnpoints ~ 1 point per km.
b) Open distance ~ 1.25 points per km.
c) Flat triangle, closed within 2% of total distance ~ 1.5 points per km.
d) FAI triangle, closed within 2% of total distance with shortest leg greater than 28% of total distance ~ 2 points per km.
Your best three scores will be added together and highest score wins.
Scoring will be clarified in more detail by the comp score keeper ~ Tom Mulder in a separate post.
We will input scores into a spread sheet and post results daily.
8. Your igc file must be uploaded to Xcontest asap on the same day as your flight. Here is a link for registration:

8. For safety each vehicle is reponsible for ensuring all people in that vehicle are safe at the end of each day. Any missing pilots, drivers or spectators are to be reported immediately to Rod or Tom M who will contact Lansar Omarama.
9. In the event of a serous accident please use first aid and immediately phone 111.
10. The organisers reserve the right to change these rules if required. Any changes will be notified on this WhatsApp group and the Aoraki Classic page.
11. Any reasonable protests in writing will be judged on by the comp comittee - Rod, Tom and Hagen.
12. The Sterling Big Sky race will be run by John Smith on one day of his choice. Turn points are available for the area and the task will hopefully be set the night before race day. Flights in the Sterling Big Sky will count towards the Aoraki Classic.
13. There will be a mid week BBQ at the old river bank camp on Wednesday night after flying. Marney will sort Salads, potatoes and bread. BYO food for the BBQ plate and drinks.
13. Prize giving will be at Dirapuk on Saturday evening 8th Jan.

The Aoraki Classic will be scored using Xcontest. Your best three flights between 1st Jan and 8th Jan 2022. Takeoff in the McKenzie Basin.
Registration at a New Year party at Rod and Marneys place ~ Dirapuk, 24 Black Peak Road, Omarama.
$20 donation to the Magic Road fund.
The Sterling Big Sky trophy will be a one day turnpoint race organised by John Smith. He will choose the day for this task and flights will also count for the Aoraki Classic.

If you have an android phone then download the ap XCtrack. This will track your flight LIVE, record your tracklog and automatically upload your IGC file to Xcontest. Like many, I am finding these two tools amazing to use!

For those planning on coming here are some accomodation options...

1. The Omarama Soaring Centre has kindly offered us NZ Gliding Association rates at their camping ground on the airfield. 🙂

• $18.00 per person per night
• $9.00 per child per night (6-16 yrs)
Non – Gliding NZ members
• $25.00 per person per night
• $12.50 per child per night (6-16 yrs)
Use of showers if not staying overnight
• $5.00 per person per shower
Included in the overnight fees:
• Use of power on site
• Use of showers and toilets
• Use of kitchen and kitchen equipment
(including barbecues)

Very basic with 2x Doc toilets and a beautiful river to swim in.
