Not all revitalisation happens in formal spaces. Sometimes it begins with people gathering together, sharing stories, singing waiata, and creating connections one korero at a time.

At Te Kaiaotanga o te Reo, we’re excited to welcome Te Rauhina – Waimārama Knitting Club with their kaupapa, Ngā Miro o Reo me Manawaroa / Threads of Reo and Resilience.

Presented by Tawhirimakea Karaitiana and Helen Barlow, this session offers a glimpse into a grassroots approach to te reo Māori revitalisation led by kaumātua, community, and connection.

This Pipiri, we’re honoured to welcome one of the most respected voices in te ao Māori to Te Kaiaotanga o te Reo.

Ahorangi Tā Tīmoti Kāretu (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Kahungunu) has spent decades helping shape and strengthen te reo Māori across Aotearoa. From serving as the first Māori Language Commissioner, to helping establish Te Panekiretanga o te Reo, his contribution to the revitalisation of our reo is immeasurable.

Many will also know his work through the chart-topping Waiata/Anthems album, where he translated nine well-loved songs into te reo Māori.

This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of the pou of te reo Māori.

Te Kaiaotanga o te Reo brings together kōrero, whakaaro, creativity and mātauranga from across the motu, with more incredible speakers still to be announced.
