Symposium Highlights: Day 1.
Programming kicked off on September 26th in the Assembly Hall at ToiToi.
We began with a mihi whakatau, acknowledging the place and people of Heretaunga to bring a cultural wellbeing to the symposium.
From there followed a day rich with inspiration, education, and exceptional tastings. Sense of Place was front of mind from Elaine Chukan-Brown’s encouragement to acknowledge the influence of people and time on terroir, to Brenna Quigley’s underscoring the importance geology has as the immobile component of terroir.
Tastings were of exceptional quality with an Aotearoa Benchmarking selection to start the programme with a sometimes-surprising blind selection chosen by MC Stephen Wong MW. Later came a special Burgundy selection presented by the utterly engaging Jasper Morris MW. We finished the day with a Californian line up that gave forth to discussion on what sense of place means to consumers.
