Local oyster farmers from the Mahurangi and other local food vendors promise to prepare the delectable little devils in a myriad of ways and the local drops

to pair them with. Whether you’re an oyster lover or not the day will provide an all-weather celebration of local food, wine & delights with live music, shucking competitions, demonstrations, masterclasses and crafts for the kids. Enjoy a glass or three of local favourites and not have to worry about the drive to Auckland with a leisurely return trip via the available buses. The beauty of the oysters from this region is they have a uniquely fresh taste with October known for producing a plump creamy and less salty taste than other growing areas, after all the Mahurangi is where oyster farming started in New Zealand. Oyster Festival Matakana is looking for expressions of interest from local wine, beer and food producers to join the party. www.oysterfestmatakana.co.nz

🌊 Fighting for Our Future 🦪

Kia ora everyone,

On Sunday all of the Mahurangi Oyster Farmers met with Hon. Shane Jones and Jenny Marcroft to share the challenges oyster farmers in the Mahurangi are facing. We’re grateful they took the time to listen, but now we need real action.

Our livelihoods, our harbour, and our community are at risk. After months without meaningful income, the future of oyster farming in Mahurangi is hanging by a thread. We love what we do, and we want nothing more than to get back to farming oysters in a clean, healthy harbour.

We’re calling on the Government to step up with urgent support, hold Auckland Council and Watercare accountable, and fast-track solutions so this never happens again.

All we want is a fair go, and a happy ending to this story, back doing what we love, and continuing to share world-class Mahurangi oysters with New Zealand and beyond.

Following this we had a local farmer Dave Morgan talk on the RNZ Morning Report, have a listen RNZ Interview.

Ngā mihi,
The Mahurangi Oyster Farmers 🦪💙

SUPPORT THE OYSTER FARMERS OF THE MAHURANGI!

This page has been kindly gifted to us from our friends at the Junction! It was the old Oyster Festival page, one day we hope to have another oyster festival and celebrate the beautiful oysters that come out of the Mahurangi.

This page will be used to keep our community informed about the challenges facing Mahurangi oyster farmers, particularly the ongoing battle with sewage pollution in our harbour.

Oysters are not only an important part of our local economy but also play a vital role in keeping our waters clean and healthy. Unfortunately, sewage issues threaten both the livelihood of our farmers and the wellbeing of our environment.

Here, we’ll share updates on the situation, community efforts, and ways you can support. Together, we can raise awareness, protect our harbour, and ensure a sustainable future for Mahurangi oysters.

💧 Stay connected, stay informed, and stand with our oyster farmers.

MAHURANGI OYSTERS, follow and support them!
