Well this one was a first…

Another midwife and I both had Mums that needed to transfer from Kaitaia to Whangarei, both in cranking labour. Two mums who didn’t know each other at all.

This photo captures a special moment just as both mums were loaded on the ambo. It’s a “picture speaks a thousand words” shot… a “we got this sister” moment… and a photo that shows the power of sisterhood 💪

Kaiawhina & Maori Liaison Services for Maternity ✨

Here in the Far North, unfortunately your Midwife may not be able to come down with you to provide labour cares in Whangarei.

So, sometimes it can be a daunting experience leaving home but also being cared for by people, you haven’t created a relationship with. Sometimes, those who are caring for you are not Māori, so it’s hard to ask for what you may need in a vulnerable time. So, the DHB have created Kaiawhina services that you can tap into when you travel down to Whangarei.

Cara is a Māori Kaiawhina who you or your Midwife can contact. She is based in Whangarei.

Serenity is a Māori liaison based in Kaitaia. You can contact her for both Whangarei and in Kaitaia.

Reach out to these ladies whenever you feel you are not being supported or just need a Māori face to talk to.
