A piece of Invercargill history will be poured at Dinner in the Spotlight 🍷

John Turnbull Thomson surveyed Invercargill in the 19th century and named many landmarks across the lower South Island, including the Pisa Range, Lindis Pass, Cardrona, Mount Aspiring and Mount Earnslaw.

With nine daughters, the Thomson family name was not carried through later generations. His great-great-grandson eventually named the Domaine Thomson W**e vineyard in his honour - recognising his contribution to the South and keeping the family name alive.

Thomson’s connection to Invercargill went beyond his surveying work. He built Lennel House in 1880, a grand Victorian home and gardens, and is also buried here in Invercargill.

Each table at Dinner in the Spotlight will receive one complimentary bottle of Surveyor Thomson Pinot Noir and one of Pinot Rosé.

Made with certified organic grapes grown beneath the Pisa Range, both w**es won gold at the 2026 Aotearoa Organic W**e Awards. The Pinot Noir is Domaine Thomson’s flagship w**e and has also been awarded 96 points and five stars by W**e Orbit.

More than a century after John Turnbull Thomson helped shape Invercargill, w**es carrying his name are returning to the city as part of our Civic Theatre’s 120th anniversary celebrations.

🚨🚦Did you know Invercargill once had its own Council-run traffic officers?

They were responsible for things like parking, road safety and traffic enforcement across the city and in 1959 the Traffic Department moved into the Civic Theatre. The officers were based in the area that now hosts the Victoria Room.

The Royal typewriter is one of the objects that helps tell that story. Look closely at the paper and you’ll see “City Traffic Inspectors Office” followed by “Town Hall, Invercargill”.

For the officers working there, the Civic was part of the everyday working day. They would come in, complete paperwork and head out across Invercargill as part of their duties.

It’s an unexpected part of the Civic’s history and one that gives a very different picture of how the building was used.

As part of the Civic Theatre’s 120th anniversary, we’re sharing more of the people, spaces and stories connected to the building.
