It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of one of New Zealand's most celebrated actors, Sam Neill.

In 2005, Sam visited the Civic Theatre for the Invercargill premiere of The World's Fastest Indian. He spent time meeting fans and signing programmes, including for young Invercargill local Jacob Scully, pictured here.

Sam's remarkable career took him from New Zealand stages and screens to Hollywood, but he never lost the warmth and generosity that made him so admired by audiences at home.

Rest in peace, Sam.

🩰 Did you know one of New Zealand’s most recognised dancers started right here in Invercargill?

Rowena Jackson was born in Invercargill in 1926 and spent her early years learning to dance and performing locally.

Her talent was clear from a young age. At just 15, she was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, taking her from Southland to the international stage.

She went on to perform with The Royal Ballet and is often described as New Zealand’s first prima ballerina.

Her connection to Invercargill is still recognised at the Civic Theatre today. In 2019, our rehearsal room was named in her honour, following a heartfelt pitch by Year 6 student Sophie Ineson.
