Hi Hikurangi Community,

Last week the council hosted a Long Term Plan workshop, where they engaged with Residents & Ratepayers groups or other similar community groups/contacts from various Whangarei suburbs to provide information on the upcoming LTP processes.

Hikurangi Friendship House and the Hikurangi Community Development Coordinator have previously engaged with the Long Term Plan processes for Hikurangi and accepted the invitation to participate in this workshop.

Part of the process was for groups to submit their requests for investment from the upcoming LTP (2027) for consideration by council staff, and these same items will be presented to the Councillors for consideration this week.

Nothing has been submitted for Hikurangi yet, so we want your opinion on what you think needs to go through the next LTP?

Here’s what we (as a local community group) are seeing as recurring projects that we’re keen to see go into the consultation process:

-the completion of the skate park on Park St, with the 2028 LTP allocated budget for a playground at the same location brought forward to align with skatepark construction, and consideration of pump track around the perimeter;

-a focus on the Lake Waro area by way of funding a “masterplan” to be created for the area by local residents, hapu, community groups, and other major stakeholders with a commitment to road sealing and installing traffic calming measures from the King St entrance to the Lake.

We want to hear from you as to whether you support these concepts being requested through the LTP, and if you think there is anything else major missing? We’re seeking constructive and helpful comments only please.

You can find the LTP categories below that can be submitted towards:

Such an amazing supportive business providing a building for the volunteer fire recruits to practice search and rescue skills. Trainings like this are invaluable and the recruits learnt so much which is vital when you are faced with a real life situation.
