A huge hole has been left in the Lake Hāwea Epic community.

Andrew Sloan was part of the fabric. He was a Lake Hāwea local, a mountain bike stalwart and multiple finisher of our great race. But above all of that he was a devoted father, friend and absolute great human being.

After 8 years “living with brain cancer” (always his words), we lost him on Saturday morning, peacefully surrounded by his family.

Next year we will introduce a trophy in his name, presented to someone out on course who chooses to help their fellow competitor in some way. Because this is what Andrew always chose to do.

We leave you with the words that Andrew spoke and lived by to the very end:

“Be the best version of yourself, everyday, always”.
