Amisfield provided the perfect setting for an unforgettable Sunday at Roam Central 2025.

The day opened in the barrel hall with two expert-led presentations, setting the stage for a day of discovery. Lunch then spilled out into the vines, where a feast was enjoyed with a diverse selection of bubbles, whites, and rosés. To close out the day, we returned to the barrel hall for the Grand Tasting, featuring over 90 wines from 31 Central Otago wineries.

A huge thank you to the Amisfield team for your generosity, hospitality, and for sharing your stunning piece of Central Otago with us.

At Roam Central 2025, the Formal Presentation brought together two flights of Pinot Noir, six wines from Central Otago and six from across the world, offering a deep dive into the global conversation around Pinot.

We explored the threads that connect our region to the wider Pinot whānau. No longer Old World vs. New, Pinot now represents a global conversation, with each region offering its own expression, yet all in conversation, sharing knowledge and respect.

A tasting of connection, place, and evolution.

Meet the Wineries: Prophet's Rock & Rippon

Founded in the late 1990s, Prophet's Rock was established with a vision to harness the unique terroir of Central Otago. The name Prophet’s Rock pays homage to a 19th-century gold prospector, capturing the spirit of exploration and discovery.

A vineyard-focused approach combined with minimal intervention in the winery produces wines that are true reflections of the Prophet’s Rock vineyards. Native yeast fermentation, minimal extraction, extended élevage and pre-release cellaring are all features of the winemaking programme.

5 cows, 4 full-time dogs, bees, occasional chickens, assorted family members and a tight-knit, top notch team working on and around the farm: this is Rippon. Rippon is also a unique and distinct parcel of land on the shores of Lake Wanaka, Central Otago which, for over one hundred years, has been cared for and farmed by successive generations of the Mills family.

Meet the Wineries: Gibbston Valley & Maude

As one of Central Otago’s founding wineries, Gibbston Valley has always focused on handcrafting premium wines and honouring the traditions that have made them a world-renowned destination since releasing the region's first commercial vintage in 1987. The wines are unfined, unfiltered, and sustainably produced.

This commitment extends beyond the wine, shaping every experience they offer. Each element is crafted to be a unique and pure reflection of the ruggedly beautiful and incredibly diverse surroundings.

Maude Wines is a family owned company that began almost at the beginning of the Central Otago wine region itself. The wine-making couple behind Maude, Sarah-Kate and Dan Dineen clocked up years of experience which they fine tuned in the Hunter Valley before they settled on the shores of the majestic Lake Wanaka, New Zealand to set up their own label.

They produce hand-crafted wines from their custom built winery amidst the stunning backdrop of Lake Wanaka. Maude is a contemporary wine statement with traditional winemaking roots. Whilst Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stand out varietals from this region and their collection, the Maude label also embraces five other distinctive wines.

Meet the Wineries: Carrick & Valli

Carrick Winery & Restaurant is committed to crafting small production, estate-grown, certified organic wines that speak of their unique home in Bannockburn, Central Otago. Twenty-four hectares of vines are nestled around the winery and every effort is made to allow the wines to express their special position on the headland of the Kawarau River and the Bannockburn Inlet.

The name derives from the gold mining town and the mountain range to which Carrick looks, and many of the wines pay homage to important local landmarks, such as the early 20th century Excelsior coal mine that runs below the Carrick property. The symbol of the ‘Carrick bend’ on all of the labels signifies the strong union between land and people.

Valli Wine, founded in 1998, creates premium wines highlighting the different characteristics of Otago’s subregions: Gibbston, Bannockburn, and Bendigo in Central Otago and the Waitaki Valley in North Otago. In 2015, established Otago winemaker Jen Parr joined Grant in the winery where the pair aims to create wines with honesty, integrity, and most importantly, a sense of place. When you drink a VALLI wine, you are enjoying more than just a wine: you are experiencing a place.

Meet the Wineries: Moko Hills & Two Paddocks

Moko Hills Vineyard is a family-owned estate encompassed within the foothills of the Dunstan Range, overlooking Lake Dunstan. The vineyard blocks are embraced by a unique mix of native flora and fauna – stands of kānuka and kōwhai hugging the outcrops of quartz and schist. Among these iconic trees, a range of native shrubs, mosses and fungal communities intertwine, creating home and refuge for a range of endemic species. Lizards | Mokomoko, such as the Kawarau gecko, bathe upon the sun-baked rock, blending into the mossy cover. Pairs of Fantails | Pīwakawaka dance between branches, snapping up the occasional insect.

The single vineyard wines produced signify a tribute to this diverse environment and the unique mix of flora and fauna that call Moko Hills home.

Two Paddocks Wines, a very, very small company, utterly obsessed with Pinot Noir. And Riesling. And with great pride - organics, quality, authenticity, detail, and style. Having said all that, they don’t take themselves at all seriously - the seriousness they leave to their SERIOUS wines. They have four beautiful organic vineyards artfully scattered around Central Otago, with land in all three major valleys of Central Otago and a long term vision for small single vineyard pinot noir blocks spread throughout the region. Each has a unique soil and climatic blueprint.

Meet the Wineries: Domaine Rewa & Wooing Tree

Domaine Rewa is a small 5.5 hectare, organic, vineyard at the foothills of the Pisa Range. The single vineyard site produce Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris (from amphora).

Planted over 25 years ago, owners Philippa and Yannick Fourbet are resolutely committed to their land and the people involved in Domaine Rewa, resulting in the production of some outstanding wines.

Family-owned Wooing Tree, located just across from the Big Fruit Sculpture in Cromwell, also has a second vineyard at Mt Pisa called Pinkmoon. Wooing Tree specialises in Pinot Noir, Rosé and Blondie. A local landmark, the Wooing Tree, has long been a popular place for locals to woo their lovers.
