A huge shoutout to Rebecca Speirs 👏

After being inspired by Are You Trying to Kill Us?, Rebecca has taken on her very first Adventure Race over in Australia, where she now lives — an incredible achievement!

To give back and hopefully spark that same sense of adventure in others, she’s generously donated $60 to have a copy of the book sent to the Mount Maunganui Library, where she grew up.

Here’s hoping it finds its way into the hands of the next adventurer ready to take on something bold

Thanks Rebecca — and good luck for many more races to come!

ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US?
Four classic ARC endurance and adventure racing films. One unforgettable night.

Originally shot for television in the mid-2000s, these films capture the raw spirit of endurance sport on the Coromandel Peninsula — wild landscapes, exhausted competitors, unlikely heroes and plenty of humour along the way.

ARC Adventure Race – Mystery of the Seven Stones
Teams navigate rugged bush, paddle remote coastlines, bike unforgiving terrain and tackle mystery challenges in this iconic ARC Adventure Race. Strategy, teamwork and sheer grit collide as competitors hunt checkpoints across the peninsula — racing the clock, the elements and each other.

K2 Cycle Race
A brutal point-to-point road cycling event across Coromandel’s steepest climbs and most spectacular coastline. From rolling bunches to lonely solo efforts, K2 captures the highs and lows of endurance riding — legs burning, friendships forming, and riders digging deep to reach Whitianga.
Moehau Multisport Race
A multisport epic: trail running, mountain biking and kayaking through remote backcountry beneath Mount Moehau. Rivers run high, tracks disappear, and perseverance becomes everything as competitors battle fatigue, weather and wild terrain.

Kauri Run
More than just a trail race — this unique event combines running with conservation. Participants race through native forest while helping plant kauri trees, leaving a living legacy behind them. A powerful reminder that adventure sport can also give back to the land it travels through.

Andy Reid, co-founder of ARC Events and author of Are You Trying to Kill Us?, will introduce the films, share stories from behind the scenes, and talk about the adventures, mishaps and moments that shaped 20 years of Coromandel endurance racing.

Alongside the stories and images in “Are you trying to kill us?” documenting two decades of ARC events, I was fortunate to be able to include many stunning landscape photographs of the Coromandel, generously supplied by cyclist and photographer Ian Preece. His images add a beautiful sense of place to the book, and I’m hugely grateful for his contribution.

To celebrate the launch of the book, Ian and I are hosting a double-header film event at the Mercury Twin Cinemas on Sunday 18 January at 5:30 pm.

Ian will be screening his film Cycling Aotearoa, which follows his bicycle journey the length of New Zealand via the Tour Aotearoa and Sound to Sound routes. Shot from the perspective of the bike, the film captures the landscapes, details, and moments that stood out along the way.

I’ll then be showing Mystery of the Seven Stones, a film from the 2005 12- and 24-hour ARC adventure race. It offers an honest look at just how tough these events are, and at the resilience, humour, and character of the people who take them on. It remains one of my favourite ARC films.

Tickets are $15 from the Mercury Twin Cinemas, and every ticket includes free entry into a draw to win a copy of the book.
