The history of Eliza’s Manor

This beautiful building close to central Christchurch has an interesting history;

1856 - The land was first bought by George Gould (one of the founding father of Christchurch).

1861 - House was built by C W Wyatt ( a member of the Provincial and Executive Councils).

1863 - The property was bought by Maurice Harris (founding merchant of M Harris and Son and President of the Jewish Synagogue). His son lived here for 45 years.

1908 - The house change hands again as it was purchased by F H Pyne.

1910 - Renovations were carried out by Pyne, including the staircase made from NZ timber off a ship, constructed in Scotland. This was the social centre of Christchurch.

1918 - This was a temporary home for children during the Influenza Epidemic

1919 - The house was leased as a boarding house for St. Margaret's College.

1922 - For a short time this house was used as a private maternity hospital.

1924 - Sister Hanna rant he house as a private hospital and then as a boarding house, the house was leased back to St. Margaret’s College.

1929 - The house changed hands a few time before 1958.

1958 - Mary Puller, a spinster, inherited the house and let it out to single women.

1981 - John and Roz Smith bought the house and converted it to luxury accommodation and a wedding venue. They named it Eliza’s Manor after Eliza Doolittle.

2004 - The house was bought by Ann Zwimpfer and Harold Williams who renamed it as the Manor on Bealey.

2005 - Ann and Harold changed the name back to Eliza’s Manor on Bealey.

2010 - A 7.1 magnitude earthquake caused significant damage and repairs were carried out.

2011 - The property suffered significant damage form the February aftershock and was closed for nine months during the repair.

2016 - The house was bought by the current owners.
