What a day for the first Winter Worlds Sector Six.

We had 75 riders turn up and race — about 30 more than expected — on a cracking winter day with virtually no wind, heaps of people out watching, and gravel that came right with two nice tracks all the way through.

The staggered starts and timing worked beautifully, the racing was hard across every grade, and the whole course had a proper buzz about it.

A massive thank you to the riders, marshals, volunteers, spectators, The Raspberry Café, and everyone who helped make the first Sector Six such a success.

If you finished in the top five of your grade, please message me or email [email protected] with your bank account details so I can pay your winnings.

A quick note about the incident near the end of the race: one rider appears to have collapsed. No other rider was involved. We responded immediately and called 111 as soon as our medical/first aid responders advised it was serious. The rider is in hospital being examined, and we expect a full recovery over time.

Ash Hart was out at Sector Six today grabbing a heap of cracking race photos.

He’s done a brilliant job capturing the day — the racing, the gravel faces, the “yes I totally meant to look like that” moments, the whole lot.

So here’s the deal: if you see a photo you like, don’t be a tight-arse and just screenshot it like you’re stealing chips off someone else’s plate.

Get hold of Ash, pay for the proper image, and you’ll get a much better version that’ll look mint on Strava, Facebook, Instagram, or wherever you need proof that you were absolutely flying.

Even better, Ash puts money back into the event from photo sales, so you’re supporting local sport as well as getting a great shot of yourself suffering in high definition.

Give his page a follow and keep an eye out for the Sector Six gallery.

Great news for Sector Six this Sunday — Ash Hart Sports Photography will be out on course capturing the action. 📸

So if you’re planning to race, this is your chance to get proof that you looked composed, powerful, and absolutely in control… even if the photo says otherwise.

Ash photographs local sporting events across Canterbury and the wider South Island, with digital images available for $15 each. Even better, $5 from every photo sold goes back to the hosting club/event — so you get a cracking race photo and help support grassroots sport at the same time.

Give his page a follow and keep an eye out for the Sector Six gallery after the race.

From Winter Worlds to the world stage.

Many Winter Worlds riders will recognise Jack Gorrie from the start line. Over the last few seasons we've watched him develop from a promising young rider into an athlete now selected to represent New Zealand at the Tour de l'Abitibi in Canada.

Talent plays a part, but so does commitment. Behind every young athlete is a support crew making sacrifices that most people never see. Katherine and Kaylib have spent countless hours travelling, supporting, encouraging and helping Jack chase opportunities like this.

Now Jack has the chance to test himself against some of the best junior riders in the world.

If you'd like to help a Canterbury rider represent New Zealand overseas, please consider supporting his fundraising campaign.

Go well Jack. The whole Winter Worlds community is behind you. 🇳🇿💪

Still worried about the gravel?

Phil’s had a roll over the Sector Six course and reckons the gravel is tame. If he can ride it, anyone can. His words, not mine — so blame him if your legs start complaining.

Sector Six — Sunday June 7th & Sunday June 14th
Short laps. Fast racing. 37% easy gravel. Proper fun.

The gravel is mint. Enter the bloody race.

I’ve just ridden the Sector Six gravel section and honestly, if you’re still worried about it, you’re overthinking it.

It’s easy gravel.
Nice clear tracks.
Totally rideable.
No goat track. No death march. No need to remortgage the house for a gravel bike.

A little kid could ride this bloody thing.

So stop being precious, stop waiting for the perfect weather, perfect form, perfect bike, perfect tyre pressure, perfect horoscope — and get your entry in.

Worst case, you don’t make it all the way round.
Big deal. You still get coffee and cake at the Raspberry Café with a bunch of other cycling nutters.

Best case, you have an absolute blast, surprise yourself, make a new mate, and maybe even meet your next partner if you’re single.

There are worse ways to find love than suffering on gravel with a race number pinned on. Probably.

I’m getting sick of making awesome races while everyone sits at home pretending to “think about it”.

So here it is:

Sector Six gravel is bloody good. The race is going to be fun. You should enter now.

And yes, someone might get offended by this post.

That’s fine. I’ll survive.
I’ve been yelled at by cyclists in lycra — being cancelled is basically a recovery ride.

The Wheel Wolves are hosting a public memorial ride for Matthew Arnold on Saturday, June 6th, and riders who knew Matt, rode with him, worked alongside him, or were connected to his cycling community are warmly invited to join.

The ride will be one large peloton led by Matt’s son, Clem, following one of Matt’s favourite routes around the bays. There will also be a stop in Lyttelton at Sons & Co, Matt’s former office, for morning tea and a chance to reflect and share stories.

This is intended to be a respectful community ride to remember Matt and celebrate the friendships, generosity, and passion for cycling that he shared with so many people.

Meeting outside PMH at 9:00am on Saturday, June 6th.
Approximate distance: 80km.

Sector Six is coming.

It’s short. It’s sharp. It’s got just enough spice to make people start pretending they’re “still thinking about tyre choice”.

Plenty of chat already. Now it’s time to see who’s actually lining up.
