Nerd Nite Christchurch

Join us in watering holes across Ōtautahi as we drink along to fun and informative presentations.

This week we held our 45th Nerd Nite and what a night it was, topped off with our anti-loneliness raffle where we gave away some of our Nerd Nite tees (peep the winners in photo 7)! 🤓

Can you believe we’ve been bringing nerds together since 2021? Next month is out 5 year anniversary and we hope you can make it to help us celebrate - you’ll find the tix in our bio 🎉 🎟️

As always, a massive thanks goes to our speakers who we couldn’t do this all without. Thank you Robyn, Kelly and Bernard for sharing your passions 🫶🏻

Professor Robyn Hetem is a conservation physiologist at the University of Canterbury who explores how mammals survive a warming and increasingly unpredictable world. 🔬🌡️🐾

By studying how wildlife adjusts its behaviour and body processes to deal with extreme heat and habitat stress, Robyn uncovers the physiological tricks animals use to keep their cool when the planet starts to heat up. 🌍🔥

“Parenting Tips from the Ice Age”

Bernard Darnton is New Zealand’s leading amateur geomythologist, proof that you can just define your own niche. 😎 He is fascinated by the forces that have shaped the Earth and the stories that shape how we think. Geomythology – not his real job – combines both.

Join us for a trip back thousands of years 🕰️❄️ to explore the stories our ancestors told about a rapidly changing world and see what they might have to teach us today.

Ever wondered how to make good use of whale poo? Helen has! 🐋💩

Helen Townsend is co-founder of Sustained Fun, a toy company that takes the work of actual scientists and uses it to create toys and games.

After starting out in botany, she discovered it was more fun to make products based on other people’s research than to do the research herself. 😎🌱

We had quite the Nerd Nite this week! 🧠🍻

A huge thank you to Michaela, Kirsten and Pav for enlightening us on AI algorithms, teaching us the very important (non) difference between kai and kai in te reo Māori, and sharing the science behind measuring squish.

We’re now all considerably more knowledgeable and well equipped for… something. 🤓

Nerd Nite is on the first Wednesday of every month, so catch us at A Rolling Stone for the next one on 7 October.

Close your eyes and picture this: you’re tucked away in a cosy pub, drink in hand. A bunch of nerds are taking you down some wonderfully weird rabbit holes... 🍻🧠🐇

One of those nerds is Dr Kirsten Culhane, a postdoctoral researcher at the New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour. She studies how acoustic variation in speech sounds, especially in lesser studied languages, and can tell us more about how language is structured, how our brains process it, and how languages change over time.

You don't have to just imagine it. It could be you this Wednesday! Grab your tickets in our bio and we'll see you at A Rolling Stone 🤓🍻✨

Meet Dr Pav Devananthan!

A researcher and senior teaching assistant at the University of Canterbury, Pav’s PhD investigated whether the stiffness of organs could help estimate the time since someone died. That meant handling more brains, livers and kidneys than most people encounter in a lifetime. 🧠🔬

Somehow, this was both perfectly legal AND a legitimate contribution to forensic science. 👀

Join us next Wednesday 2 September and get to the heart of the matter. 🖤

Ever wondered why two people typing the exact same thing into Google get completely different results? 🔍︎🤔

Michaela takes the audience on an A to Z tour of search behaviour - the psychology, data, and quirks behind what we search for and why - with a few live, interactive searches to prove her points.

Well, s**t. That’s the first time we’ve had an in-depth and theatrical chat about laxatives at the pub. Thanks (?) Jaco! 💩

Lucky for us, Jeff and Rie were there to warm up the room with the magic of improv, and tales of the s*x and death that's been hiding in the history of our beloved fairytales. 🧚‍♀️💀

Honestly, one for the books. And we’re coming back for more! Grab your tix for the next gig on 2 September 🤩

My Little Jester: Improv is Magic

Jeff Clark has been wrestling with what improv is for over thirty years, most notably as a member of The Court Jesters and/or as “Gary Starlight”, iconic NZ entertainer you’ve never heard of. He loves a good nerdy topic, but this one might just be his superpower. 🦸‍♂️

Come along on Wednesday 5 August and let’s see what happens when curiosity takes the stage. 🎭✨
