Don't wait for the difficult conversation.

Build the connection that makes it possible.

Let's be their first choice, not their last.

One of the best parts of what we do is hearing directly from young people about the difference these conversations are making.

Recently, Brett had the opportunity to speak at Rage in the Waikato, a youth event, and was encouraged by the engagement. Even more encouraging were the youth who came up afterwards to share how a previous Tāima Kōrero presentation had stayed with them and influenced the way they think, talk, and make decisions online.

These moments remind us why this work matters. Every conversation has the potential to make a lasting impact.

Ngā mihi to the young people who shared their stories with us. Your voices encourage us to keep showing up and doing this important work.

A big thank you to Aotearoa Gaming Trust for supporting our work.

Because of support like this, we’re able to keep showing up in communities across Aotearoa helping parents, caregivers and young people navigate the realities of growing up in a digital world.

We’re grateful to have organisations alongside us who see the value in open conversations, connection and prevention-focused education.

Two thirds of kiwi young people have never talked to a parent or caregiver about p**n.

If we're not talking, they're learning somewhere else.

Tāima Kōrero, it's Time2Talk.

What they see online, doesn't stay online.

Exposure to online s*xual content is influencing young people's attitudes, expectations, and behaviours in NZ.

The good news? Open, ongoing conversations can make a real difference.

Start the conversation early. Keep it open.

Not every conversation about p**n has to start with a big lecture.

Sometimes the most effective approach is simply creating space for your child to talk.

Try starting with:
“Have you ever had stuff pop up online that you weren’t actually trying to see?”

It’s low pressure, non-judgemental, and acknowledges the reality that a lot of online content appears unintentionally.

The goal isn’t to have one perfect conversation.
It’s to make talking feel safe, normal, and ongoing.

We’ve been approaching school parent evenings in a fresh way lately, bringing together expert panels to tackle the growing challenge parents are facing around social media, harmful online content, and its impact on young people.

Previous sessions have included the NZ Police and children's wellbeing and mental health specialists.

Our next conversation is at Rangitoto College, facilitated by Matilda Green - broadcaster, spokesperson for B416 and host of the One Young Mind podcast - alongside Dr Samantha Marsh, one of New Zealand’s leading academics and researchers on the impact of screens and social media on children and young people, and a member of B416’s Expert Advisory Panel.

Social media pressure. Harmful content. Constant access.

There is no break from it. And young people are growing up inside it.

That’s why schools are bringing these conversations to parents now.

Ngā mihi nui to the Lottery Grants Board Te Puna Tahua for supporting our work. Their support helps us continue creating spaces for honest conversations, practical guidance, and stronger connections for whānau navigating the online world together.

We’re grateful to have partners who believe in the importance of keeping these conversations going.

Did you hear? Meta is expanding teen safety protections across Instagram, Facebook and Messenger in New Zealand.

The new settings include:
• stricter limits on age-inappropriate content
• screen time reminders
• more parental supervision tools
• restrictions on who teens can interact with
• tighter controls on comments and messaging

Some changes are rolling out now, with additional protections arriving later this year.

These updates are a positive step for online safety.

But even the strongest parental controls can’t replace an open conversation.

Young people still need trusted adults they can talk to when something online feels confusing, upsetting or unsafe.

Technology can help create safeguards.
Connection is what helps young people navigate the digital world well.

Keep the conversation open. 💛
