Kaiwara Classic

Kaiwara Classic Adventure Mountain Bike Race, from Culverden to Cheviot.

The Kaiwara Classic is an adventure mountain bike ride from Culverden to Cheviot, 43km of mountain biking adventure. The race starts outside of Culverden and heads over the Lowry Peaks Range through the Ethelton Valley up the Random Spur before the final fast 4wd track descent to the finish in Cheviot. The event is run by the Cheviot Lions Club with proceeds from the event being used to fund community projects in the Cheviot area.

The Rowing for Life NZ rowing team was unable to get to Gore Bay on Monday 11th as planned. On the Sunday they completed a 10 hour row getting from Waikuku Beach to Motunau Beach, rowing directly into the Nor’easter wind.

There is a split in the bow of the kayak which is being repaired, with luck the team will be back on the water.

Greetings Kaiwara Classic loyal followers! It is with regret that I'm posting here to let you know that the Kaiwara Classic and Epic mountain biking event will not be happening.

Our Club has struggled for the past couple of years to get enough marshalls and event organisers from within the Club. This year our club is becoming smaller as well as the average age older so we have decided that we are not in a position to run the event.

We have successfully staged the event for the past 15 or so years - apart from a weather cancellation and COVID 19 cancellation in the past couple of years - and we appreciate the support we have had over the years from people such as yourselves. Our community fundraising efforts have been bolstered by this event and we will miss that, of course, but mostly we'll miss the atmosphere at the end of the event when you all (or mostly all) successfully crossed the finish line.

Thanks again
Cheviot Lions

Cancelled!
It is with regret that the organising committee of the Kaiwara Classic 2020 have decided to cancel the event.
We have been monitoring developments in New Zealand and around the world, as you not doubt have been as well, and feel that the restrictions on gatherings are likely to be extended to groups of less that 100 or smaller shortly. Alongside this social responsibility we also have the health and welfare of our own Lions members to consider - many of who are in the "at most risk" age group.

We invite you to pencil in Sunday 4th of April 2021 when we plan to hold the next much anticipated event across the Lowry Hills range.

Thanks to those of you who had committed to this years event by registering early. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Please remain connected to this page for when we start advertising for 2021

Refunds will be processed promptly (within the next couple of days)

regards
Cheviot Lions

https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-novel-coronavirus-information-specific-audiences/covid-19-advice-public-events-and-mass-gatherings

The above link provides information for your consideration if you are attending a gathering (16 March 2030hrs).

Current advice, amongst other points, includes :

Do not attend if you are feeling unwell

Do not attend if you have just arrived back from overseas (excluding the Pacific Iislands) within 14 days prior to the race date

Practice good hygiene especially hand hygiene and sneeze etiquette.

You will know that gatherings of over 500 have been asked by the Governement to be cancelled. The Government also said that they will be making an announcement on smaller gatherings during this week - this is the annoucement that will affect the Kaiwara. We will take into account Government advice as well as make a decision as a club - considering the health of our (many) older Cheviot Lions members and spouses who act as marshals on the day.

We are listening to current advice from the Ministry of Health not social media outlets

In the event that a government directive cancels this year Kaiwara Classic - participants will be refunded their entry fee (less any credit card processing fee charged by the banks). The refunds will be processed promptly after the cancellation. In the meantime, if you do feel unwell and need to withdraw then you can process a cancellation yourself. If you have any difficulty then contact Robert on [email protected].

On 16 March 2020, the Government advised public events or mass gatherings where 500 or more people are together in one place, at one time should be cancelled. Examples include concerts, festivals and sports matches.

SUPPORTERS

We haven't forgotten about you and we are not talking about cycling shorts!

We know that you are the one getting up early, driving from home to the back of beyond and home again on your day off. You can enjoy the comfort of a hot meal, post race in Cheviot and we'll even do the cleaning up afterward. Just get the "cycling crazed one" to book a "supporter meal" when registering for the event.

CLASSIC OR EPIC?

Can't decide which one to register for? The system allows you to make changes up until close off.

The Epic adds approximately 20 mins to the event - but considerably more calories burnt. It's recommended that you have some experience with single track riding before giving this a go.

If you have any difficulty then feel free to message me and I'll make the adjustment before it goes to the timekeeper.

Pop you registration onto the system so you are not rushed nearer the date.

5th April - 1 month away - What will you be doing?

We have had an excellent start to registrations for this year's event with around 30 early birds.

Sponsorship is falling into place and the marshaling team are getting their plan together. It would be nice if Mother Nature could let us know her plans but .......

Still plenty of time to register, but if you would like to use one of the free transfer drivers then you'll need to register soon.
