Having a clearout, not many of these left so if you missed out and want one fire me a message. The keyrings (aluminium ones) were made from recycled material at the festival.

A test pour from the new furnace. It was also a test pour in to a rigid mould, that is why there is some flashing around the edges.

The surface quality is really good, the metal flowed in to all the corners and this one usually ends up with a missing bone.

I have not even polished this one, its straight oit of the mold.

Sustainability update from Castaway Foundry

For a long time I have mostly used LPG/gas to run the furnace, heat metal, and create the pieces we make. That system has worked well, and it has allowed me to collect metal and objects that would likely have ended up in landfill, melt them down, and turn them into keepsakes with a strong recycling message.

I do have an electric furnace, but the heat-up time, power use, and ongoing crucible costs have never quite fitted with what I am trying to achieve.

Over the last month I have been developing new furnace materials and building a new system that moves away from buying disposable crucibles. The exciting part is that I can now make my own crucibles, and when they eventually break, the material can be recycled and made into a new crucible.

Even better, I have tested the new system using solar power. We have a small solar power plant, and so far it seems to have no problem feeding the furnace.

This feels like a big step forward: recycled metal, reusable furnace materials, lower waste, and the possibility of solar-powered casting.

I am really looking forward to giving this system a proper run over the next few weeks.
