World of Cultures

World of Cultures A celebration of food, music, sports, arts and culture from around the world. Presented by Auckland Council Events

World of Cultures is a multicultural festival coordinated by Auckland Council. From 21 March to 6 April we celebrate the vibrancy of all cultures within Tāmaki Makaurau. The festival begins on Race Relations Day, a national day when “We can reflect on the things that bind us together, while also appreciating the differences that make us unique and special,” says Meng Foon, Former Human Rights Comm

issioner. Within the festival it’s an opportunity for us to celebrate the contribution of our ethnic communities and collectively make a stand against racism. The festival includes a variety of activities organised by community and cultural groups, along with some from Auckland Council facilities, held in libraries, community centres, parks, art galleries, malls and other public locations - as well as large outdoor events such as the popular 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁 at Mt Roskill War Memorial Park on Sunday 6 April 2025. Since Auckland Council took over the event at the request of the Refugee Services group in 1999, 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁 has been an experience of food, music and dance with more than 60 cultures celebrated at one place, on one day. For a full list of events, please check out website at www.worldofcultures.co.nz

Every year we're given the privilege to celebrate the huge range of cultures and peoples that have chosen to make Tāmaki Makaurau their home.

Through World of Cultures, we get to help share that privilege with everyone across the region and showcase the people, places and communities that make this one of the best places in the world to live - so we want to thank all of you who put on events, workshops, classes and experiences. Those who gave up their time to visit our libraries, community centres, set up in our public spaces, showcase your talents, creativity, passion and aroha for us to all share across the series - we appreciate the work, passion and skill that goes into this. And to those who explored, created, and learnt through it all, we hope it helps you appreciate the beautiful tapestry that makes up our home.

Kotahi te kohao o te ngira e kuhuna ai te miro ma, te miro pango, te miro whero. Through the eye of the needle pass the white thread, the black thread and the red thread. This is a Whakatauākī (proverb) said by Kiingi Potatau, the first Māori King in 1858 at his koroneihana (Coronation) and a timely reminder of why we celebrate World of Cultures every year.

What's in a name? A rose, by any other name would smell just as sweet - but how would that name translate to martial arts?

Tomorrow at Studio One Tou Tū, we finish of World of Cultures exploring martial arts movements and principles as participants explore how gestures can carve signatures through body and movement.

And of course, we also have ongoing exhibitions happening all over the region - so check out our website - www.worldofcultures.co.nz to learn more.

Did you know it was this day, 45 years ago in 1981, that the New Zealand Film Archive was created? It was created to ensure the collection and protection of the filmed stories of Aotearoa and it documents the way our home has evolved and grown for almost half a century.

Visual filmed storytelling is both influenced by cultural, societal and technological elements - and as part of World of Cultures this year we've had a few screenings already, with one tomorrow as well in East Coast Bays exploring the life of a Peruvian shaman who has faced adversity in the pursuit of selfless service!

You can learn more about the screening as well as all of the other World of Cultures Activities at www.worldofcultures.co.nz

This afternoon's World of Cultures activities are about rangatahi getting creative!

In Botany, the Library is helping you get a good night's sleep with Guatemalan Worry Dolls - who are said to take your worries away at night.

Or head to Highland Park to learn how to make the traditional Japanese food Mochi - a chewy treat that can be savoury or sweet depending on the chef!

For all of our World of Cultures Activities, check out our website - www.worldofcultures.co.nz

What an epic day in Mt Roskill today for CultureFEST!

Thousands of people came by to explore and celebrate the many threads that make up the tapestry of Tāmaki Makaurau with us!

It wouldn’t be possible without the massive amount of mahi put in by our operations team and the ground crew from events working tirelessly to bring this all together!

We also still have a whole week left of World of Cultures - so heaps more events to get through!

Our site team has been hard at work all day at the Mt Roskill War Memorial Park getting ready for tomorrow’s event!

The weather is looking stunning so bring a hat, sunscreen and water to stay hydrated!

To answer a couple of questions we’ve been sent - this is a dog friendly event but please keep all four legged friends on leashes - we don’t want to have them freaking out with everyone around.

We will have heaps of staff onsite in case you or a little one with you, gets a bit disoriented, and it might be a good idea to write your phone number on the hands of anyone too small to remember their care givers number - just as a precaution in case the team needs to call someone.

We love seeing people on bikes but please not through the crowds - we have a bike Valet service from Bike Auckland available if you’re cycling to the event.

There are no cash out services on site.

So hopefully we’ll catch you down at the War Memorial Park from 11 am Sunday (or 10:30 if you want to take part in the Mihi Whakatau)
