The first known show was held in 1867 on the village green until the Government of the day granted its present site in 1900. Historically our aim was to promote excellence in agriculture, to celebrate its importance to the area, and to promote rural life, while bringing country and town closer together. While still aiming to do those things, we have also become a Family Fun Day promoting family fu
n in a country setting which offers traditional activities like wood chopping and sheep shearing, as well as free children’s entertainment, miniature horse and goat competitions, dog agility demonstrations and a full programme of activities on the main stage. Other than the World War years when the land was requisitioned by the Defence Department as a large camp area for New Zealand and American troops, the Annual Show has been held every year except 2020. From 1954 to 1990 there was a two-day Show and since then an annual one-day Show has been held, except for the two-day 150th anniversary Show in 2017. A few years ago, the emphasis changed to a Lifestyle Show aiming at the changing profile of the Warkworth area, with farmland changing to more lifestyle blocks and a larger proportion of weekenders. In 2019 a decision was made to change the date from the Auckland Anniversary weekend in late January to a March date because of the difficulty with increased traffic volumes over the holiday period. With a large Community section, Kapa Haka and Pasifika displays as well as the traditional shearing, chopping, petting zoo, and of course our wonderful indoor section showing vegetables, baking and other produce the Show has expanded to become a family Fun Day out for young and old. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, who help enable this show to happen, we plan to continue to hold an annual Show for many years to come.
